I have Knoppix on a CD handy, which i may boot up shortly and have a good explore around it - but do you know which is the most used etc - at the moment im not Linux Literate as such, more Microsoft (which i want to change).
I've only really used Live CDs of Kubuntu and Knoppix, one of which detected all of my laptop's components (bar the native screen resolution) and the other which didn't detect much. I can't remember which was which. Lol.

It is very difficult to say what is the best Linux distribution. What sort are you looking for? Do you want everything done for you, or do you want to dabble a little?
If you don't mind a bit of Googling, research, luck, learning something new and common sense, then you can go for one of the 'harder distributions' - I personally like Debian.
If you just want a distribution that works, I would recommend SUSE or Ubuntu. Personally, I prefer Ubuntu, since it seems to be nippier and only comes on 1 CD. However, SUSE is probably a bit more user friendly, and has more packages since it comes on four/five CDs.

Lol. You know Kubuntu.......would you recommend it?
i NEED A LINUX lol.
edit: So ive herd about Suse, im kinda after aquiring perphaps distributions that require that tweaking abit, but since im new to the environment perhaps a lazy version (all done for me)
I guess you could say im after both.

I use Ubuntu on my laptop. It detected everything and I even got my wireless network working with it! I've tried all distros under the sun before and have never managed to get one to connect to my wireless network. Ubuntu is easy and it just works
Is it possible if anyone could download Ubuntu for me and then zip it to me?
Ive got wireless connection with Aol silver and its not promising...............
If bandwidth is a problem, then Ubuntu is a good solution since it comes on only one CD. You can order online (for free): https://shipit.ubuntu.com/

I have heard very good things about Ubuntu. It won the PC Format linux round up too.
I've got tons of discs.. iirc it ships from America? So if you live in the UK send me your address via PM and will send you one tomorrow (got to go to the post office anyway).Originally Posted by Ljuboja

Did know that the guy that owns Ubunto is that American guy how was the first space tourist. Does that make it any cooler lol?
I prefer Suse for a desktop and Debian for a server. If you feel like learning a whole lot then go for LFS but only if you have a LOT of time on your hands...
We use Ubuntu in a few places in this house, I have it here, a guy upstairs has it, and on a laptop, and our lounge-PC has it on which we use for music/video. It works with my Belkin 54g Wireless card too.
They do ship to UK because that guy I mentioned upstairs (Oly, if you're reading this, join Hexus!) has ordered loads here in the past, and taken over his school with it! I think they made him admin cos no-one know's what's going on anymore
