It's a great advert!
It's a bit of a shame the first bit of flashing advice is 'Don't buy Esso'. A careful reminder that they are a political organisation.
yes...but then would you support an organisation that actively ignores the environment? ...i know i'd like a planet to live on in 50 years to come...

Oh I saw this on John Culshaws program tonight.
I guess due to the length it was shown in cinemas and not tv.
Must get email...

rofl a good advert from greenpeace...i never thought id see it....
although ppl riding whales was a bit eyecatching
Did I detect subliminal messaging at the end?
Well...yeah; that's rather the point isn't it - do you expect them to make the ad, go through all that to tell people that buying certain products supports companies that damage the environment, and then not mention WHICH companies? I should bloody well hope that they ARE political - that's not a dirty word you know, except when it happens to be inconvenient to the people on the wrong end of the politics in question.Originally Posted by TeePee

Given that Georgie Boy's campaign bills are basically paid for by companies like Halliburton and the rest of the oil lobby, and given that that's what places him at the head of the most powerful nation on the planet, I don't give a **** whether it's "original" or not; it just happens to be pretty much on target.Oh hey guys look George Bush, how original.
The point of the advert is that we should make a choice about the ethics of the companies we choose to use. Then telling us not to use a specific company takes away the choice.
Theres a difference between 'Buy wood products with an FSC logo' and 'Don't buy Esso', as if all the oil companies apart from Esso are ecologically sound. They should say 'Choose an oil company that looks after the environment'*, but instead they jump off their moral highground and start rolling around in the mud.
*Not that any actually do.
No-one's taken away ANY of your choice; it's the considered position of Greenpeace that Esso are a particularly bad offender - no-one's stopping you ignoring that, and pointing that out if they believe that to be true is hardly rolling in the mud. In fact if that's what they believe to be true, it'd be irresponsible NOT to state it.

The point is, the advert is about us having a choice, and then it isn't. It reverses what is a smart advert and turns it into the usual bashing of a particular company.
The advert is about an idea, and a very good one, and the advert should stick to that instead of targetting a specific company and losing that idea.
No, it points out several companies that are causing a problem and promotes several companies and products that help alleviate it. The "idea" of the ad is about promoting the choice to use environmentally friendly products and not to use products from companies that not only damage the environment but use considerable financial muscle to promote policies which damage it. It's entirely in keeping with that idea to name the good and the bad. You think it makes more sense to have an ad that says "Hey, we know there are a few companies who are particularly guilty when it comes to climate change, but we're not going to tell you who they are..."?
Not at all! It should stick to giving advice to let you make informed choices, like using FSC approved products.
Nice ads. Can they broadcast it on TV though ?
