i used to type shorthand for everything (u, r, a, noob etc) but now i generally type words out fully (minus capitalization etc). this is simply because my typing has got to the stage where an extra few characters will only slow me by a fraction of a second..

I think that my spelling is pretty good myself, what i normally do is type what i want to say fast then at the end go through what i have put down on the screen and then check for spelling mistakes.

The main weakness i have is missing commas, full stops or other characters from my posts.

But it does not bother me too much if people dont spell properly, i have more important things to worry about .

My spelling isnt the greatest but I will abreviate things into "text" language, the problem I think is children these days, they have become more and more lazy and as a result they use this "text" speech in day to day situations....

My biggest errors are mixing the middle letters up a bit e.g. bought might be written as bouhgt but this is a genuine error.... My head knows how to spell just fine but my fingers dont keep up so its just my fingers being a bit careless TBH.

Here's an interesting thing I picked up on my travels.... Dont blame me for any mistakes, I am quoting direct -

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae.

The rset can be a total mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm.

Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey ! lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.

    amzanig huh?

Tip for those that got confused - DONT concentrate on the letters, just read it thru and see what happens

capitalisation and grammar seem by biggest problems -
One of the funny bits of my course is Writing: Formal & Natural - all about formal logic notation, and then expressing it correctly in english - it's surprisingly difficult - at which point commas and semicolons are only useful in certain circumstances - it's very off, and quite tough to get your head around!

I really hate 'txt spk' or whatever it would be shortened to. As a result when I do send a txt it is usually quite long and over a few messages and costs me more, because I am writting properly. Also takes me ages to type it all in. That's probably why I don't bother with that much.

Heh. If only I had a red pen!

Forum-speak doesn't concern me too much. It bothers me when people start sentences without a capital letter. Infact, when punctuation isn't used at all. But then, as has been pointed out, it's a forum. It's a pretty laid-back place, so people take a more lax approach to typing, but I still like to make the effort. Makes it easier to read, and looks so much better.

Is it wrong to pride one's self on the vocab, diction, pronounciation and written word used?

What bothers me is the spoken word. I'm not going to go on a big socio-economic rant, but there are particular groups that show all the signs that 'text speak' is here to say. It's a large group, and could be described as our next generation. "Ain't" "innit" and "fing" [instead of thing] really do bother me. It's not fing, it's thing. Th. "Innit" is pure lazy. Are the 0.24 seconds taken to say "isn't it" really going to be put to better use? I think not.

I watched an episode of EastEnders recently. If 18, 20, however many millions of UK citizens are watching that, we're screwed. Really screwed.

    "'ere, Alfie."
    "Wot?"
    "'ave you 'ad some tea?"
    "Nah, I ain'"
    "Want some?"
    "Nah, I ain' hungry, princess"

    Ugh.

Scary. That's very easy to read... What I really hate is 'txtspk' in capitals without any punctuation...

"LO M8 HOW R U IM A FKIN IDIOT" etc, etc

Though having said that I tend to spell everything out in full and construct (mostly) full sentences when I send anyone a text message and it can take bloody ages - so I'm probably at the other end of the scale. I do tend to post without reading through what I've said though and I often make mistakes because of that.

I'm with you there, Malfie. My mother, for example, uses this when writting a text message to me, and indeed others. Granted, she's about as 'au fait' with a mobile phone as a fat bird is with salad. [Oh...too harsh?] Admittedly, and in her defence, she doesn't use M8, LO, and the other colourful words Malf pointed out, but her constant use of "YR" and "U" really bugs me. Thing is, she's very well spoken. It's like a persona that the majority of all mobile uses take over when they hit that "Create message" button.
