    standard of written english

Having read some posts on here and other boards its seems that the literacy of some people is quite astonishingly bad, I have used one forum or another for about 18 months and only recently have I noticed this downturn in the standard of english in use.

Mis-spellings, using phonetically spelled words and horrendous grammer, also a ballistic apporach to punctuation seems to be quite common.

/me waits for someone to point out the grammatical errors in this post.

Anyone got any idea as to why the standard is slipping?

Whats the point?, It isnt a letter to your boss, a legal letter, job application form etc..etc.... Its on a internet forum - plain and simple-, so i really dont see the point in checking over a post to see if i've spelt everything correctly.

    Well...

Nah I won't, but you're quite right; it's a shame people don't bother to write properly these days. The 'txt generation' is upon us

I just noticed a spelling error in my first post, but some people make no effort to spell something correctly.

It can be painful trying to read some posts, and I agree the txting generation seem to be the worst offenders.

I like to think that the majority of my posts are legible and make some sort of sense but some peoples are gibberish.

I think that most of the time it's not so much that people can't be bothered but that most don't know any better.

'Spelt' is how you spell it right, or have I spelled it incorrectly?

Too many people are used to writing things as they say them, not realising that they are writing incorrectly.

I once appeared on the Xbox community forums as a user named M.O.E.L. (Ministry of English Language), and had tons of fun correcting the poor use of English. Made some rather witty posts if I do say so myself.

The end of the matter is that people really haven't made an effort to learn proper English usage early enough, and they don't care about it now. With all this quick and easy posting, quality writing and good language use will become rare but precious things.

The line has to be drwan somewhere..

Frankly many people dont want to read post from people who are incable of stringing together a coherent sentence. If you cant spell fair enough not many of us can.

personally i think the people who are very illiterate on forums is pretty bad because you have plenty of time to fit all the text in the post and you generally have lots of time to write it up.

It's not a text message. Learn to spell!

Some people have problems with things like dyslexia, so please don't be too harsh on them. Others however just don't seem to care, and frequently those who misformat or misspell their posts often don't have much worth reading in their posts anyway.

yeah, i have no problem with people who have dyslexia or similar, my fiancee's brother is dyslexic and struggles but i get the feeling that some people just can't be bothered to make the effort to make their posts literate.

I have really bad spelling. I have no idea why, it just seems to have deteriorated over time, which really sucks. What does annoy me though is when people post like it's an SMS message or something, abbreviating every word to 1 or 3 letters, etc. Just looks awful and makes it hard to read.

Personally, I do look over my posts and correct any spelling errors eye sea. My spelling is actually very good, so if you sea misteaks, eye am typing wrong, knot spelling wrong.

I cheque my spelling to satisfy me, however, knot other people, and eye do knot expect others two do the same.

When I sea spelling misteaks in posts, eye do knot worry about it, sow long as eye can make owt what the post means. Butt sum posts are almost impossible two reed and it seams often two be caused bye shear laziness.
