    PC world

After experiencing probably the worst refund/customer services policy ever, ending up with a £59 gift voucher, I thought my PC World woes would subside from there.

Went in today, to compare prices on components that I was looking for to build a new PC. Considering PC world is known as "the computer superstore", their range of components is rather lacklustre. In fact, the best graphics card they had available was a radeon X300.

Even worst was the horrific prices they charge for products, like £170 for an Athlon 64 3500+, whereas Scan has a 3700+ for £92something, retail boxed as well!

So I ended up with a rather dissapointing selection of a new keyboard and mouse to complement my new machine, and they gave me a £34 gift voucher back .

I'm tied to PC world again, damn gift voucher!

Anyone want to join in for a good moan about PC world?

The reason why I got the voucher in the first place was because I purchased a graphics card there. When I got home, the graphics card didn't work in my machine, yet it worked perfectly in theirs.

I protested that "upon the point of sale, I was confident enough to realise that this card would be compatible with my computer", which it should of been, but obviously something wasn't quite right. So I wanted a refund.

They nearly made me walk out the shop £60 out of pocket, until I eventually was able to get him to give me a gift voucher.

Even more strangely though, I spoke to someone a few weeks ago who went into PC world with a similar issue to me and got a refund almost instantly. No quibble whatsoever.

My unhealthy hatred for the place bubbles each time I go near it/think about it

what you do is, you buy it on the website with collect at store, most of the web prices are pretty reasonable. As far as knowledge goes, they arent a component store, they sell machines, their employees dont need to know about the insides, just how to sell full systems.

I have to say if it had been my shop youd have been out of luck there too, everywhere like that will have compatibility disclaimers in their warranty.

I'd sort of understand if the other guy I spoke to (in a similar situation) got the same result. Yet he got a refund, straight away. Even the card worked in their machine no problem!

This was at the Nottingham store however.

He said it might of been due to the fact that I'm 19 and he's 28.

EDIT: + I can't help but think people who are buying pre-built machines from there are getting totally ripped off. Especially for some of the specifications listed :\

I have used the Nottingham store quite a few times in the past and will do again, I always use the collect@store option on there website, have only took 1 item back and got it swaped for a new one with no quibbles.

btw can't you use the vouchers at any DSG retail store....... Dixons, The Link...etc

    Sorry just to clarify.

I had my problems at the Lincoln store (I go to Uni there), but I'm back at home now in Nottingham.

The Notts store were fine about the other guys problem, no quibble refund.

pc world is expensive for a reason - it costs alot of money for the large floorspace, and showroom effect - they will have much higher costs than principly web stores/single stores like scan, so have to charge higher prices.

    Thats part of it anywya

its true! whule on occasion i liked to browse round the preston store i dont think i ever baught anything. E*uyer, S*an, D*bs, and A*ia have pretty much destroyed any chance of that. many of the items i was looking at (the last being a set of 5.1 speakers with decoder) ended up roughyly £30 or +25% more expensive even after postage. you cant ignore that. a few pounds more and id be happy to be able to buy it then and there but £30?! ill wait for the postie thank you!

They always watch me suspiciously while I'm seeing how bad the systems are in there.

Like I'm gonna try and steal a desktop. Pfft.

Actually (and I dont know why i'm defending them *again*) most of the system they sell are good - for the average consumer.

PCWord doesn't target geeks/gamers/techies (ie any of us), they target the everyday person who needs a PC that will just *work* when it arrives, and if it doesn't work that they can get someone to fix it without having a clue about the 'magic' inside.

So while they seem poorly specced to us, for the average none-techie who just wants to surf the net and play the odd game its not bad.

If you're on the lookout for a printer, keep your eye on the PC World website, I got a pretty good deal on my Canon pixma printer last year, and at the time there were some other pretty good printer deals too.

Don't buy cartridges from there though

PC World Sucks they are on commision which says it all!

The best game in the world is going into PC World talk to a sales rep about something you know tonnes about and trip them up as they try and bull**** there way through an answer.

Never use pcworld unless you want hassle n stress
