I know the reflectors look pretty naff but isn't it wise to have as many ways for traffic to see you (be it reflectors, lights etc) as possible if riding at night?

It is. The law used to require that the cyclist was able to give "audible warning" to other road users. Most people thought that meant a bell, until some busybody tried to prosecute a cyclist for not having one, but the cyclist was able to argue that he could shout instead. After that case bike shops stopped putting bells on bikes. Then a few years ago an MP introduced a private members bill to make bells a legal requirement. I think that bit of law is silly as no one can hear a bell over traffic anyway, so it is just another bit of government red tape. I guess it is mostly harmless.

When I am out mountain biking I make a point of saying "Good afternoon" (or morning) in a fairly loud voice when I approach ramblers.

I've been doing a lot a riding using well made tracks, hard ground and roads at the moment to get to and from work. The off road chunky tyres at 45psi where slowing me down a helluva a lot.

Shoved a set of slick XC tyres on running at 65psi and put the speed up by at least 3mph (can get quicker but I'm lazy). Fantastic.

Of course, it bucketed down today and on the deep mud the bike was having a good old slide about in corners. Typical.
