I've been drinking some 75% whisky as of late, which is an interesting experience, but I haven't found it on shelves...not that I've been looking particularly hard

there's only one brand of "real" absinthe available (Jade Liqueurs), since all the companies that used to make it pre-worldwide-ban forgot the techniques. now it's just green vodka with wormwood in it. see http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/1...the&topic_set=

I don't actually know what particular brand or type he uses, he brings it in one of those metal flasks on nights out, and all I know is that it's green.

if he's swigging it from a flask, it'll be modern tosh from a supermarket. doing that with a fifty quid bottle of nouvelle-orleans would be a crime

it's not about being poor - swigging decent absinthe is like mixing decent champagne with orange juice, or mixing well-aged sipping rum with own-brand coke

Absinthe is to be savoured (mostly) But if you're an old chav like me, add a measure of Stolly & a can of Redbull/Lucosade and ice.. perfect cocktail

back to the beer.... it's probably a Trappist concoction - and as such will be quite nice. Try it, if you don't like it don't worry seeing as how it was free and all that

lol Well you can't really go swagging a great old Absinthe bottle about when clubbing and pubbing, so I don't see what's wrong about flasking it, why so negative

like many drinks, it shouldn't be drunk neat or with ice - instead requiring some fairly specific preparation (ricard undergoes a not-too-dissimilar process in france before drinking)

My dad had some Bells whisky given to him maybe 30 years ago, but doesn't drink it. Well he found it the other day and said i can have some, its 70% abr so very strong stuff, just wondering if anyone else has seen whisky these days at 70%...maybe its common but i looked around sainsburys and didn't see any whisky over 40%

Yep, it's safe. My dad used to be a member (may still be, for all I know) of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. I once idly perused some of their literature and learned that most malt whisky as distilled is somewhere north of 60% ABV. When the big brand stuff is being bottled up after aging to be sold though it has to be diluted down to 40%, and the dilution with water makes it go cloudy.....so it has to be filtered, which takes away some of the taste. The SMWS would sell you (for a price) bottles of undiluted whisky straight from the barrel. I remember with particular fondness a certain 35 year old 65% malt. You're meant to dilute them down to a sensible drinking strength yourself, but that held no interest for a teenage headbanger like myself. Still, I was impressed to find that tasted back to back there were big differences between the tastes of different types of whisky. If I can ever afford it I might join myself.

It's more than likely one of those bitter liquor drinks. My guess is that it'll taste not too dissimilar to Jagermeister.

You do see high percentages liek this occasionaly, but the main problem is that in the UK, the tax rises pretty quickly along with the ABV percentage. By the time you get to something with 70%, it makes it so expensive that most people wouldn't pay for it.

I think the highest percentage I've seen was a rum about 85%, and it was pretty evil stuff.

hehe, no havent touched it yet. may do tonight! should it be chilled first do ya think? ended up going to b&m bargains and getting a ****load of 29p alcopops (green tea apparently! tasts pretty much just odd lemony) and some of there suprisingly good selection of real ales.

However i SHALL try it tonight
