    Help with College coursework (computing)

    I'm doing some coursework, and it says:
    Explain: How data can be represented electronically

    Anybody know what this means? I'm confused!

    I'll ask my tutor tomorrow.. but if I could figure it out before hand I can get on with my work!

    Cheers

    Edit: I'm guessing it might be along the lines of something to do with binary? maybe not..

    "Explain: How data can be represented electronically"

    data can be repersented electronically by binary

    e.g 10111011 which is 187 as a simple binary number

    hope that helps?

    Yeah we've gone through countless amounts of binary, denary, hexidecimal, adding them, converting them... driving me nuts.

    Looks like it might be binary then.. might just lay it off till tomorrow..

    you could make a table of binary numbers what convert to letters

    e.g

    00001 = a
    00010 = b
    00011 = c
    00100 = d

    ect....

    and then after you have compleated it you could write a string of words in binary

    that would look good in coursework...

    That sounds like a good idea, definitely something I'd consider. I'll see what my tutor has to say too, he will hopefully be able to give me some examples.

    It was to do with binary. Also to do with stuff like ASCII too.

    Still a bit confused by how he explained it but it's only a small part of the huge assignment.

    mp3c are you sure that binary to ASCII conversion you have done above is correct?

    I can work out binary numbers to normal numbers fine.. but I'm trying to figure out how to convert binary to ASCII (haven't done this yet at College). And all the converters on the net seem to appear different to what you have done above...

    Any help?

    Thanks

    If I'm not very much mistaken, what mp3c posted was just an example of how letters could be represented by binary, not what ASCII actually is. Of course, I'm sure Wikipedia would have the full list. After all, you can find anything on Wikipedia.

    Yeah I've seen that page, just didn't look that far down (didn't think binary would be on the same page!).

    Thanks

    why dont you try to define what "data" actually is, and what the term "electronically" actually means?

    that might give u a better understanding of what the questions actually asking.

    or talk to your teacher who's teaching the course in the correct format to get you the pass marks you require and is paid to spend time to get you to understand it. Rather than some random peoples (although excellent examples) interperatation of your view of what the question actually is.
    It is Inevitable.....

    Cover things like binary, octal, decimal, hex etc

    Also ASCII and bitmaps.

    I had to do almost the same thing a few months back.

    I don't need to go into too much detail, because there is a list of stuff I need to explain. Plus it needs to be under 100 words for this part.

    yes i was just making an example of what you could do to represent the characters. sorry for the confusion
