So we have had the new next-gen consoles and HDTV. Both have made a difference to my life and how I use technology for pleasure.
My question is though what's going to be the next big thing?

Both of those are examples of an evolution of previous technology that better enables them to make a difference in your life.
My vote's tied as to which is the next thing that will improve, but it's between IP services (er.. internet) and mobile phones. Mobile phones have room to improve through the generations and become a much more central part of home entertainment. Sky have started this a little with their capability to remotely program your own recording over a mobile.
However I think IP services (TV over IP, voice over IP etc.) are probably going to make the biggest difference, whilst enabling devices such as phones, consoles etc. to better integrate themselves into the overall experience.
Wimax or its equivalent is the next "massive" thing.. It will simply destroy lots of types of "media" companies in one quick blow.
Think about it, nationwide rediculously fast net access... VOIP on phones - kills mobile networks, True HDTV on demand. No landlines, it'll change everything.
Next big thing?
A proper, seamless and easy to use interface between all my devices... So I can program my PVR, get my email, manage my bank account and stream my content all from whichever device I happen to have to hand.
Sure, we can do all that stuff now, but there's not one UNIFIED system that does the lot...
Media center type devices and place shifting.
Also, hybrid devices that really *do* do everything including large amount of storage, audio and video recording and playback, camera and phone. There are a few devices that are close, should only be a couple of product generations until they hit the mark.
