Yeh its been confirmed, just checked the BBC website. I bet that is very scary. I hope these warnings help people survive.
I wouldn't be too worriedIt said a 40cm (16 inches) wave hit Nemuro port in the Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido.![]()

Gotta love the BBC...
Yeah, never mind the water pouring in through your house and washing away your PS3, let's just post a comment on the BBC...Are you in Hokkaido? Have you been affected by the tsunami warning? Send us your comments and experiences using the form below.

Poor japanese folks, they get the worst, earthquake and tsunami;s.
i wouldnt be surprised if this is fairly normal up there - its just since the big one, the media is all 'tsunami?? PANNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIC'. like 'airplane flys into newyork?? PANNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIC'.

ok so im glad that the new system works if not a little drastic, however BBC have described 16inch waves as small tsunami's!
i suggest the reports checks out Wikipedia for the definition of tsunami, better still go to Hawaii and check out the size of the waves they have on a daily basis![]()

But it's not the height of a tsunami that does the damage, it's the length.
Normal waves have a length of a few meters at most, so they 'topple' as they reach shallow water... a tsunami has a length that can be as long as several kilometres... this means their energy isn't lost as they hit shallow water and rather than break, they just keep on coming... it's only once the mid point of the wave hits shore do they start to lose some momentum.
This is what makes them so dangerous.
well, a normal wave and a tsunami are completely different. a tsunami is a body of water moving towards something, but a normal wave is just water rotating over and over, water doesnt actually go anywhere with a wave..
