    No it won't

The buggy moves 5m/s to the right, the treadmill runs 5m/s to the left, the wheels spin at the same rpm they would if the buggy was moving at 10m/s on the ground.

You should have drawn the treadmill as long as a runway according to the description, to give the plane room to take off.

no they dont, they spin at 5ms-1, the treadmill moving in the opposite direction has no impact on the speed of the wheels.

so if you get on a unicycle and make the wheel turn at 5mph, you'll move at 5mph, but on a bike if both wheels move at 5mph, you'll move at 10mph?

The thrust doesn't spin the wheels. The thrust moves the plane forward. The wheels spin because they rub against the ground as the plane moves.

yeah but if the treadmill moves at the same speed as the wheels, but in the opposite direction, then relative to the ground, the plane wont move

That's where you're going wrong Steve... the treadmill might well counter the spin of the wheels... but it doesn't counter the thrust of the engines...

The effect of the treadmill matching the speed of the wheels is similar to the effect of the wheels being on ice... ie, if they're skidding or spinning, the plane will slide about yes?

What causes it to slide about when the wheels have no effect? The engines.

Therefore the whole wheel and treadmill thing is irrelevant, the treadmill and wheels can go as fast as they want... nether of them has any effect on the force of the engines... (Unless the pilot slams the brakes on...)

Can you please explain the video earlier in this thread where someone uses a skateboard to represent the plane, a desk fan for the engines and a long paper sheet to represent the treadmill then.
Since the skateboard carried on acclerating no matter what was done with the paper undenreath it
Also, please stop using dodgy physics.
Read up on newtons 1st, 2nd and 3rd laws of motion before going on about forces and speed rather than forces and acceleration

What the treadmill does is irrelevant. The thrust still makes the plane move, the wheels just spin faster as they rub against the ground.

Imagine you're running on a treadmill and somone standing behind the treadmill starts pushing your back. Can you stay stationary by running faster?

yes if the treadmill speeds up to match the new force

I still re-iterate my arguement in my previous post.

The plane will only take off if there is sufficient vertical thrust or lift to overcome gravity.

Wheter its on a treadmill or ice or water, whatever. Thats pretty irrelevant.
