Why do I always get into this position with assignments...

Now, I have a big 3dsmax assignment in on friday and I'm working solidly all week. I had the intention to do it weeks ago, but it never got done. Now my lecturer said:

"If you hand it in before the 5th of january then I won't know when you handed it in as I only get into the office on the 5th" - now, he said he wasn't condoning anything - but if he was bothered about me handing it in later than next friday - before the 5th jan - would he have mentioned the above? I've e-mailed him, but hopefully I will have up to the 4th jan to hand it in.

    its the rules mate....

we had an assignment drop in box in the library

I had a mate who's mam worked in the library who fooooolishly told us that this box only got emptied on a Monday morning.... which meant that assignments due on a Friday could be handed in on sunday night at 10pm....

guess who started his undergrad proposal on the Friday...

guess who also handed his MSc dissertation in the same box at 7pm Sunday (when it was due in on Friday at 3pm.)

8 out of 10 assignments handed by me at uni hit the box on sunday night

Now ignore the above and really put your best in all week and get it done....

However in my experience , most lecturers do try to help and that does look like a big hint to me, but you need to decide if its worth the risk.

My advice would be to try to get it done, because you sound like you have motivation like me.

what year are you btw... does this assignment count towards classification?

They do try to help, but it does affect their perception of your work, i.e. it could be fantastic but still they'll feel "why didn't they hand it in time?" - unless you have some medical reasons to justify such delay.

    (a) if you can, work like a robot and get it done...
    (b) if you absolutely *must* miss a deadline, don't try to over do it, a day at the most is your best bet....only if you must.

Not trying to toot my own horn, but I was more or less always on time with coursework (in my case reports of mini/large projects) and I try to have the second-third draft ready by the week it is due.

Does your uni not have some form of time stamping for assignment submission, or some other proof of submission?

We have to fill in a form for each one we hand in, and hand it in to the general office, who then stamp our form, give us a copy and your done. The time/date of submission is recorded and goes on the form ;/

I would do my best to get it done for friday tbh, if you run out of time you run out of time but can still get it in as close to the official date as possible

Yeah, they do have time stamping. Which is why it's odd that he said he wouldn't know.

What Uni is this again? We never had this - just hand in our coursework before a deadline and the receptionist just puts it in the 'correct' pile. No receipts...nothing.

I only had to sign once and that was for my Final Year project which was 2 bound copies of around 150 pages each, and if one got zero in this module, you fail the degree!

I'm always good with handing stuff in - main problem this year is the temp job :/

    3rd year at the moment.

I'm at Staffordshire University - possibly one of the worst universities in the country...well if this is what staffords like I would hate to see the ones below it in the league table :S

I find it very hard to believe that universities these days don't give out reciepts for handins though, especially when a late or no submission usually means automatic zeros...

This takes me back ... at uni we had deadlines for assignments but if you asked for an extension you'd get it no questions asked... if you asked for an extension to an extension you'd get it no questions... I had 6 assignments than need to be done in the last week before my exams started.

Taught me an important lesson in life

My uni does this, its very useful when the uni looses a major section of your year 3 project! As has happened to some of my class mates. I think its discraseful they can't look after work that students have spent time and effort on producing.

I had to hand mine this last week. A couple of all nighters and it was all done. (Yes I have a job as well as uni)

And Spud Staffs ain't that bad. Granted there are a few lecturers and would do a better job as traffic cones but all in al it's not bad. You do get a receipt of that hand in when you hand in assignments. the carbon copy of your hand in form. which should be dated.

I'm not really going to get started on my reasons for disliking stafford uni in this thread as it goes off topic

It has its good points but unfortunately many many bad points, such as deciding to totally change my degree structure during my second year..but thats another story.
