You know, I sat for a good couple of minutes thinking about this one, and for the life of me I couldn't come up with one decent thing about GB.

There are things that are good, but most of them could be moved to another country and be just as good. I get very very little satisfaction out of living in the UK. The weather, the people, the politics and government, crime, mentality, the everyday grind. The people are friendlier in Oz, the food is better in Hong Kong, social services are excellent in Singapore, weather is better in L.A., crime is less in Canada.....

So can somebody please come up with some really good things about Britain and remind me why it's good to be here? I suddenly feel very depressed.

Everyone would feel a lot better about the country if we got rid of the sensationalist tabloid media that dominated out TV and newsagents.

I'm mainly speaking about Sky News, GMTV, Five News, Daily Main, Express, and the red tops

Nothing much 'Great' about Britain anymore. The law is crap, the NHS is rubbish, The police don't care, The government are a right bunch of monkies, Tony Blair is Bush's Puppet, The country is being over-run by Immigrants, The taxes are way too high etc. Sorry about the moan but you have to face it, what is 'Great' about Britain anymore?

Yes you can pick one thing better from each Country, but you can also pick one thing worse than Britain.

My wife is from New Jersey, which I love, but she adores Stourbridge (even Dudley - the poo hole that it is).

History, Culture, Sense of fair play, equal handed and level thinking Police, Friendly people, a Pint of ale in a local pub that you can walk to, the fact that jobs are second and life is first (unlike the states) although a lack of displaying it with flags every where a massive loyalty and patriotism to ones country as a whole and area (ENGLAND, ENGLAND, ENGLAND) Being able to admit we're not the best at everything, being able to admit we may mistakes (and giving Countries back to their rightful owners) the humour, a small town shopping centre, enjoying some fish and chips, a massive mix of ethic and home grown food, a free health service for all, not just the working, the stiff upper lip.

I could go on for hours. We have so much, but we belittle ourselves too much. So many foreigners want to live her and envy what we have.

What do we do? Moan, moan, moan.

The current state of the Government and Country annoys me at the moment. But look at the big picture -
I'm healthy, happy, earning money, having fun with the lads, drinking fair priced good tasting beer. Complaining would be sheer hypocrisy.

As I saw on a flag once:
    Born in England.
    Live in England.
    Die in England.

Even when I move to America I will NEVER take their nationality - I'd never give up my own, you'd have to take it from my cold, dead grip.

For me I love our varied history.

We have loads of Roman stuff round here like forts and the famous Hadrians Wall. Not forgetting the local castles like Alnwick and Chillingham.

I love reading about the early Monarchy like Queen Elizabeth 1st (Good Queen Bess), Sir Walter Raleigh and his sea journeys and many others.

Then our old stories of Dick Turpin, King Arthur and Robin Hood. We have such great history documented, its fantastic.

Every country has its greats and its not so great things, and unfortunately for us, we have a lot of things to moan about, fuel prices, goverment, immigration handling... tons of stuff that could be better managed but isnt.

    I agree with Ferral

We have such a great historical story and lets not forget the celts

I know the country isnt great, but im proud to be a Britain, proud of my heritage. I was born and raised in Wales, but mums English and im proud of that heritage aswell, its not about what this country can offer you, its about making the most of it.

We could list everything that this country needs improvement on, what its crap at, and what it needs to do.

What do we do? Moan, moan, moan.
    Hear hear.

A lot of my friends aren't from the UK - they're from somewhere else. As much as they love what they did call home, and they will always be "from there", they proudly call this country their home (which some people don't like but screw them). Even myself, who lived in Hong Kong for a while, would much rather be here and I'm proud that other people feel the same way.

Fair enough, some places were war-torn or had no real opportunities for a decent living. But for the most part, they're from countries that have got better itemised aspects than the UK - better weather, overall healthier lifestyles, civilised, . . . sure they all have their bad points (what place doesn't?) but if you concentrate on the bad points, then you don't make it easy for yourself - why don't you go try and make a difference instead?

On the flip side, I also know plenty of people who had to leave this country because it got to them so much - fair craic, they did something about it.

As for what's so great about Britain - I can hardly point out anything that is outstanding either - the food sucks, the health sucks, the people that supposedly look after your health sucks. . . but hey, my council runs a good bus service. Point is I live here, and for long term living, there's very few places I'd like to be (although I've never been to Canada it seems like a nice candidate). If thats how I feel, then Im taking the good, the bad the ugly.

Sorry, this has turned to be a post moaning about moaners
