    Yeah thats a good point.
Me and my flatmate were with Powergen for several months, until last year we changed supplier (foolishly) and we got hit with a £150 'final statement' from Powergen due to the fact that all our direct/D payments up till then were based on estimates.

    They are evil, these companies.

You've got to remember, that in the Old Days, you got a Bill based on a Standing Charge (maybe £10 a month) for your permanent connection, then you paid maybe 5p a unit (kwh) for each unit used. That sort of payment is too simple now. If everyone did that, then How The Hell can we Bamboozle you?
Make it NO standing charge, but 15p per unit for the first 736 units, and 10.56p per subsequent unit. Or £3 standing charge, and 9.2p per unit for the first 76 units, and 7.6p each subsequent unit....
The whole idea of "flexible payment options" is to make it hard for the consumer to know what the Hell they are paying. You'd need to spend a day or two making your own spreadsheet up to find out what really is best for you. Of course, there are Websites that do that, but many of those are "sponsored" - i.e. if the Company Don't Pay Us, we Don't List Them!
Having said that, turn off you electricity at the consumer unit and watch your meter. If it's still turning, then you either have someone nicking your electricity (happens more often than you'd believe), or you have "leakage" due to old or crappy wiring. Crappy wiring is an increasing problem due to cowboy electricians that aren't qualified, but are cheap.
The electric meter doesn't distinguish between electricity used by an appliance, or electricity used by faulty wiring heating your cavity walls. It'll just see Electricity Used.

    monthly electric bill of £137!!

Hi, i am having the same kind of problem with my bills.

We have got a five bedroomed house now after extension, but i do not think this effects it.

My problem is that reading we have taken at various points in the day are low. For example if my wife goes out all day we use 1 unit. She comes home with kids -tv goes on, dinner cooked etc it goes up.

The problem is at night from about 2230 until 0700 say. Somehow with everythjing switched off we use 8 units!!!!

I am interested to read about the dodgy switch earlier not switching to cheaper rate. Was this just for economy 7?Should i ring my suppleir and ask them to check?? They have already checked the meter and found no fault.

    Please help!!
    Nick

About £50-60 I think (2-bedroom flat). Which I think is kinda high. I do have a 24/7 PC on, which is probably the electricity hog (I also suspect the bathroom fan, which goes on for ages if you just switch on the lights for 2 sec just to wash your hands for 10 sec adds to it, though I am not sure how much electricity that fan uses). The rest of the flat is pretty economical though. We don't use the tumble dryer, use energy saving bulb, have no TV, harder ever use the (electric) cooker, don't use an electric heater.
