I've seen this TV running at the Sony shop near me.

Its a good TV, its quite deep though (CRT deep) and quite large as a chassis.

The picture is good no problems. You would however need a large space to put it due to its depth and chassis size, its not mountable like an LCD/plasma in any way.

The quality appears at best about 1.5 - 2.5 meters away, futher / nearer its not quite as good.
    It is Inevitable.....

Trust me, it ain't CRT deep - i'm the not-so-proud owner of a 36" CRT and it's a monster compared to this

I went to the sony shop in Poole today to see if they had one, the closest one was the 50inch one but I know macro sell it so it cant be that good. It was not full HD unlike the 55inch one
    Bournemouth store might have one

Suggested viewing distance is 2.1m minimum but it's not really a concern with 1080 stuff. I don't know why you had a poor experience further away, maybe not set up well ?

Anway, it is a great set. I've auditioned TV sets pretty much for 6 months and IMO it's better than any other screen under 2k. Obviously it has the rear pro con that you need to be in the vertical "sweet spot" but who stands to watch TV anyway ? For me that was far less of a worry than the LCD and plasma cons. Only other (usual Sony RP) thing is the VGA input is duff. Hook it up through HMDI and you're fine though. The set's internal scaling seems really good and although SD is never gonna be pristine on a 55" set from 7 feet away, it is about as good as it could be without spending tons on an external scaler.

The Panasonic PH9 50" and Pioneer 50" plasmas also had excellent PQ but but weren't really an option for me as this will be a main TV, and as such will be used for games, Sky etc. and I can do without worrying about screen burn/retention, which I've had first hand experience of. Not on current plasmas ? I'm afraid so

That's not a bad set either but a lot more basic than the SXRD, and 720p.

    Has anyone bought one yet?
Yep, but it hasn't arrived yet

PS. there's tons of info/opinions/pics over at AVForums !

    Will do !

There's a ton of info in the rear-pro section of AVForums, don't know if you've already been there. There were about a dozen of us all humming and hawing and in the end I think all bar one bought

Regarding warranties, you'll possibly find that the lamp isn't covered as it's a consumable. There's been quite a few instances with RP warranties of people being told verbally the lamp is covered, but then the insurer not paying out down the line. I'd double check with whoever you buy from.

I'm not that worried though as the SXRD lamp is quoted as being good for 8000 hours, which is double some of the previous generation of RP's. Current replacement cost is about £250, but that's for the official lamp assembly. With a lot of RP's, you can get just the bulb if you know where to look but it's a bit early for that with the SXRD. Anyway, what other type of TV allows you to pay £250 5 years down the line to bring it back to full brightness ?

I looked into lamps and you can source them for the US for a good half of that Just off to the sony centre for a gawp now.. It really does tick all the boxes for me (technically) it's just a question of whether it'll look silly in my front room - it's quite a jump from 36" to 55"!

I think the lamps can be souced from France fairly cheaply too. Will be good to see if just doing a bulb swap is feasible.

Regarding looking silly sized, my last big TV went wonky so in the interim we've been watching a 28" CRT. Won't be that much of a step up

Well I went to look at it - it's a monster I really like it but, frankly, it's just far too massive for my front room.. The 50" (2010) next to it would be a better choice but it's pre-SXRD I asked the Sony guy if there was another size and he grinned and said 'yes, 70" sir'. Apparently they market that one as a replacement for a wall..

We are looking at a 50" plasma from Rickersounds for work. £1200 inc VAT is amazing. If i didn't already have my 42" is would probably get one as well.

At least i can be sure than when i do move to a larger place i'll be able to get a 50"+ possibly with 1080p by that point for a decent price.

    Tch, chicken !

I know what you mean though. I kinda managed to order it over the phone without the missus properly remembering what it was like. She was in John Lewis the other day and they had one on display. She came home in a mild state of shock Bang went my "it's not that big, and it's a corner stand, so it won't be that noticeable" excuse.

Sony are seemingly adding a 50" SXRD to the new range launching September(ish). But it's not yet clear whether we're getting it on this side of the pond. It's rumoured that we'll only be getting one SXRD RP, in 60".

Just in case anyone's still interested...

    It's here, it's huge and it's awesome

Although it was a little scary when the box arrived ('bout the same size as the shed ) when it's out and on the stand and stuck in a corner it's not too bad.

After quite a while faffing about in the menus the picture quality is great. Even standard def isn't too bad. It's been well discussed elsewhere that the set has decent scaling and so it's proved. With 1080 sources it's *tries to think how What Hi-fi would describe it* gob-smacking !

Even the missus is quite happy with it

    Will do !

Just tried to tidy the living room up a bit and realised I've done the typical bloke thing of assembling the stand with bits left over. Two little feet pad thingies for the base. Which means the TV and all the gear will need to come off the stand so I can turn it upside down to stick them on. Grrr, arse, feck etc. ! Will post pics once it's all back together

Haven't hooked the PC up to it yet, but it's on the to do list. Not sure how my weedy little 7900GT will run games at 1920x1080 though !

Oh, and if anyone is still deliberating about buying one, and you already have some sort of rack, Amazon have the set on it's own for £999, much cheapness !
