Graphics Card Help re Dual Output

I have a Shuttle SD31P PC with a Gainward GeForce 6200 TurboCache 256Mb Graphics Card. The DVI ouput is attached to an Iiyama 17" LCD monitor, and VGA (Sub-D) output is attached to a Sony Bravia 40" LCD television.

I am using Powerstrip utility to stretch the resolution to 1360x768 so that it fills the screen on the Sony LCD TV.

Problem is that I need to run the Iiyama monitor at 1280x1024 resolution but I can only set one resolution for both outputs.

Is it possible to independently set the resolution for each monitor?

Do I need two graphics cards?

    Any help appreciated, thanks.

Iirc, display spanning forces both displays to be the same resolution. Dual view allows different resolutions on each monitor.

I'm using a Geforce 6200 as well and have 2 different screen sizes. It's just a setting in the NVidia control panel.

Even so, I would recommend using Utramon - it's my favourite piece of software when using dual monitors, lets you change loads of other settings

There's a trial available to download.

I tried using DUAL view but on the secondary display (17" LCD at 1280x1024) it was blank, although I can see the mouse / cursor arrow when I move the mouse.

    Am I doing something wrong?

it's blank but you can see the mouse cursor on it? sounds to me like it just has a plain back desktop. did you try dragging a window onto it?

Well, I've tried using both Powerstrip and UltraMon but I get the same result.

    - I'm using the Dual View option, with both monitors set to different resolutions.

    - The Primary display is showing the normal desktop.
    - The Secondary display is blank with no icons, but when I move the mouse across I can see the cursor on the blank screen.

All I want is two monitors showing the same desktop but at different resolutions.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks

ah, i understand now. What you're after isn't possible.

To clone desktops like you want, both have to be at the same res.

i can't imagine how you could have two monitors, one a clone of the other, with different resolutions etc.

the only way that could happen would be if ultramon resampled the image. Maybe it does, I've never used it.

edit: yep, ultramon resamples the image. I'm trying it just now. It's not too bad, but if you go down more than one "resolution step" for want of a better name, text becomes pretty unreadable.

it also is pretty rough on the cpu by the looks of it, and can't do any hardware accelerated stuff, so playing videos/games this way is a no-go.

Is the only way to do this by using two graphics cards?

no, most cards these days have two outputs. There are carts with three and four outputs as well.

Well I am using a graphics card with 2 outputs but someone has suggested that it is not possible to have two monitors, one a clone of the other but at different resolutions.

It's not a cloned display if they're different actual resolutions - you can re-scale one of the displays but you're never going to get real widescreen and 4:3 from the same source.
