128MB GeForce FX 5900 XT
is this card a good mid range contender?

Id class that as more high-end, ive got a FX 5800 Ultra 128mb which has faster memory timings than the FX5900 and i love it, the new graphics core on the FX5900's make up for the FX5800 Ultras memory speeds

I think the 5900Xt is a slightly gimped 5900.
There was a news link on Hexus a while ago, I believe it fared well, beating the 5700Ultra and 9600XT by around 25-30%, but IIRC, the DX9 benchmarks removed it's pants. As with the other nVidia cards. But otherwise did well. And it was aimed at $200. I think. But don't quote me on that.
Perhaps someone who is more knowledgable can comment?
Anyhoo, here's a recent review.

[XP2500-M @ 200x11] [2X512MB Crucial PC2700] [MSI K7N2 Delta ISLR] [160GB 8MB Samsung SP1614N] [160GB 8MB Maxtor DiamondMax9] [Megaworks 250Ds] [GeforceFX 5900] [Viewsonic VP171s]
Its definitely a High end card, Its the Equivilant of the 9800 Pro, there is one higher in NVidia's range which is the 5950.

Yes it's supposed to be the equivalent of ATI's Radeon SE range - but it seems like it's does a little better than that:Originally Posted by NeilI

No no, that's the 5900 ultra...this is the 5900XT, a cut down 5900 on a smaller PCB, performance above 9600XT and 5700 Ultra just about, but still has the dodgy dx9 problems with all nvidia boards.Originally Posted by TiG
Definitely a mid range bargain if it's the same price as a 9600XT, but anything above £140-150 for it and I'd say it's not worth the cash, especially with the dx9 flaw.
I'm not up to speed on the flaws of the nVidia boards, but are these flaws software or hardware??Originally Posted by Byatt
Basicially, if nVidia sorts the drivers out, is there a chance the DX9 performance will improve??
Cheers.

You may wish to consider the 5900XT-VTD from here, as it sports MyVIVO capabilities too.Originally Posted by d__lindsay

thankyou for all the help
so i have reached the conclusion that this card is a good mid range contender?
in response to this, and your previous post:Originally Posted by NeilI
it's thought that there is an architectural problem with dx9 for nvidia boards (I think, we need someone like austin to clarify this) which is being worked around with drivers...obviously this workaround will get better overtime, but it's generally considered that ati cards are natively pretty good with dx9. (get this clarified by someone who knows more than me before accepting it as fact though )
VIVO isn't quite the same as an AIW card...AIW cards come with a TV tuner and VIVO, VIVO cards just have VIVO.

So what does VIVO actually do?
If I provide a RF in from my aerial, will it record TV programmes? Or does it need to go through the TV, or VCR first???
Thanks again.
