Re: graphics card for vista advice

haha, just sent them an email about it.

do you not think the card would be wasted with a max resolution of 1280x1024 on my tft? even if i did manage to get one for such a cheap price i`d feel bad for not utilising its full potential.

I wouldn't say it was wasted at that res..certainly its capable of higher resolutions but this way you can just wack the settings to full and not worry about it.

Re: graphics card for vista advice

yeah see your point, would just be nice to get the most out of it.

if it is available for same price i may bite the bullet and go over my budget though, it would be stupid to say no to such a great deal, especially if you are in the market for a graphics card as i am.

if it dont though, and it is in stock i`ll most probably end up with one of these, HIS X1950Pro IceQ 3 Turbo.

just see your graphics card on the drop down menu on the left. you have a quality card mate. why do you want another one? is the noise on the 8800 gts that bad?

Re: graphics card for vista advice

It would be going in a budget build I might do for uni so i'm not always stuck on my laptop.

It would be a shuttle style machine which I was going to run integrated gfx on until i found a bargain gfx card I wanted..GTX fits the bill.. plus i've had one before but it was DOA so I returned it and got the 8800 instead. Chances are I won't build it though..trying to stop myself doing it as I need to save the money lol

yep i certainly know that feeling. but theres always something you end up wanting lol

good luck with the build though, IF that is you do it, i know the cons of only having a laptop, still have my old sony vaio around in the house, did its job bless it, but its battery was dreadful and would run hot enough to melt the polar ice caps, well maybe not that hot but still...

i`m hoping with the help of my brother (him being the senior partner even though he is younger than me) to build a pc for my mum. some really old piece of crap she has at the moment. i`ve already got 1gb of samsung ram sitting in my room, if i do ever get a new graphics card, she can have my 6600 as well, would 'just' need a semi decent mobo/cpu bundle and hopefully i`ll cannabilise the rest from her existing machine.

Re: graphics card for vista advice

I've got a lovely new dell xps M1330 with pretty much every option maxed out..so i have absolutely no excuse to build a new one other that I just want to..i've told everyone else it's becuase i need a stable back up ..they didn't fall for it lol.

I've got an old vaio to..still going strong..strangely i'm using it right now..for this I have no excuse considering the other machines I have available

Re: graphics card for vista advice

lol no excuses at all, unless...

you build it and sell it for a profit to another student at your uni, or have a one room LAN set up and charge people to come in your room and play games on LAN on your collection of PC's and laptops

and how old is your vaio? mines the pcg-9n1m. 512 ram and a celeron CPU. have had it for about 5-6 years now i think. if the battery wasn't so bad i`d probably use it more than i do. to avoid it getting super hot, i normally have to balance it on 2 books, one on each side. it actually burns if i have it resting on my lap

Re: graphics card for vista advice

haha yeah could do that actually.

Mines about 4 years old now. vgn a195hp , 1.6 centrino, 512mb ram and 64mb ATi something or other..actually handles counterstrike source very well lol.

haha the old book balance trick..i know it all too well with this thing..i have a scar from when i fell asleep using it one night and it rested against my leg..damn thing!

i actually made the mistake of opening it up to see if i could clean out the dust but as soon as it got close to open, all the pastic bits inside that the screws sit in fell out and they were all melted

Re: graphics card for vista advice

i think they should come with a health warning!

your one is definately a newer version than mine. at least it is centrino and not the celeron cpu i have.

and i have never dared opening mine up.

all that said, still served me well, and is still running, just very very slowly.

There are details how to get it in the scan forum..or just do a search for scan and carriage or something..should come up with plenty on it.

i just hope now when i get the GPU it fits in my machine. that would just be my luck. i`m pretty sure it will JUST fit, but the nice man from scan said it is twice as big as my 6600

It's just short of the end of the motherboard when installed if that helps. Should fit pretty much anything
