No screen when booting from PCI-E graphics

    Hello all

Ive just put together a system out of aload of bits i had.

    Specification:

    Asus A8V-VM SE motherboard
    AMD 3800+ 64 SKT939
    EVO33 Heatpipe heatsink
Ati X850XT Platinum Edition PCI-E graphics card
    512mb DDR400 Ram
    40gb Hard Drive
    54x CDROM.
    400w PSU

The problem is that when I plug my monitor in the VGA (blue one) on the graphics card, the PC boots up but no screen is displayed. The fan works on the graphics card.

The graphics card has a 6pin plug, the lead was missing so I ordered one from ebay. The fan works even with this disconnected so I understand it is getting power from the PCI-E 16x slot.

Using the onboard graphics, the computer boots up no problem.

I have updated the bios to the latest version, tried re-seating the card etc. The card doesnt show up in windows on the system devices page.

Im stumped. Maybe the cable i bought is wrong? Its a male 6pin connector which plugs into the card, with 2x female molexs. Each molex as 3 wires going to it.

Any ideas? I dont have another PCI-E slot on any of my other computers, so i cant test the graphics card.

    Thanks all

Sounds like you bought the right cable. Its 2 molexs into a single 6pin PCI-E power plug. That should work.

What PSU have you got? Your profile says 400w generic. Can you post back with some details from the sticker on the side of the PSU, specifically how many +12v rails its got and how many amps are on each.

Re: No screen when booting from PCI-E graphics

Should be fine- there is plenty of current on the two 12V rails- more than enough actually. Your 400W PSU should have been plenty (providing it is a decent brand)

Try turning the onboard graphics off in the bios or ensure that the new graphics card is enabled in the bios.

Re: No screen when booting from PCI-E graphics

I bought one of these MBs - it's utter junk. I solved my problems (there were many) by the same method you did - buying something else (an ASROCK of all things which has been perfect).
