    8800GT Heat

Not being the one to say "I told you so" but...........

These 8800gt cards seem to be hitting temps 15-20 degrees Celsius higher than the already fairly hot 8800gts cards. Once I saw that several people were hitting 90 C temps and above with good case air flow I changed my mind quickly. Also if you look back at before the card was released there were several indications that heat was an issue during testing.

I could easily quote individual users but here is one of the few reviews that actually tested the temps. also the tested card is at STOCK speeds.

(quote)"Temperature could be a potential sticking point for the GeForce 8800 GT. From our observations, the single slot cooler for the GeForce 8800 GT is stretched to its limits here, with recorded temperatures of the core much higher than the GeForce 8800 GTX at full load. The memory chips were also found to be among the highest for the high-end cards"

After market cooler, you say! why should I pay an extra £25 for something that should work in the first place.

Considering the GT (£160) beats a 8800GTS (£270) card, an extra £25 (Well cheapest I've seen is £16) isn't much really is it?

    Re: 8800GT Heat

Even the 640MB GTS can be found for a lot less than £270.

That said, I would expect the GT to be hotter than the GTS given the superior performance.

It does work in the first place. What you seem to want is a card that overclocks like a mofo out of the box. 90C is manageable temps for a GPU (and no doubt that was a factory overclocked card jammed in a case with moderate to little airflow). If you want to overclock it, get an aftermarket cooler, it's the same thing as CPUs, simple, I also have little doubt that we'll see 8800GTs with aftermarket coolers factory assembled in the near future.

But is 90C manageable for your cpu cooler?
Because thats whats copping for all the exhausted heat from the GT.

At least the GTS throws it out of the back of the case with it's dual slot.

True, but that 90c is the core temp. The heat put into the case will not be close to the temp. More like 75c, still hot mind.

My GT idles at 55c and reaches 83c under load/ Alot more than my 7900GTX. I bought mine for £145 inc del, so I dont mind buying an aftermarket cooler.

It's not the temperature that matters (that's a product of the chip and heatsink), it's the TDP (which is 110W for the G92), which is no more than the first gen C2Q's, and a lot less than the Pentium D chips, so yes, a standard Intel heatsink would handle that easily, as would the rest of the system. Graphics cards have thrown out more heat energy than that in the past. The GT does it's job, no more, no less.

The only valid gripe you could have is the inflated price tag in Europe, or maybe the immature driver support.

    Re: 8800GT Heat

my 6800 would reach 115c on occasion with the gainward cooler. if it works why bother about it. if your using a high end card be prepared to cool it. otherwise there is always a 8400 which if im not mistaken runs passively

    Re: 8800GT Heat

Heh, I just hope my Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU fan and4-5 case fans will be enough to keep the box as a whole cool, especially with a slightly overclocked Q6600 C2D in there...anyone foresee any problems with this setup using an 8800GT?

    Re: 8800GT Heat

If it don't crash, it ain't too hot, no matter how hot it is. I doubt that nvidia (and their partners) would launch such cards and then have loads of bad publicity and associated costs as the cards all died from overheating in 6 months time. They will have been testing for heat issues during R&D and if they weren't confident they would have gone for a 2 slot cooler design.

As long as you have adequate ventilation in a case (the hot air from the graphics card is going to rise and then be taken out through the rear case fan or PSU if you have one with a fan in the bottom) then you will be fine.

    Re: 8800GT Heat

I thought I saw in one of the reviews that they've moved the temperature sensor slightly in these cards to give more accurate readings, if that's the case it's possible that the large jump in the heat could also be down to better testing.

    Re: 8800GT Heat

Makes me wonder if the passive cooled sparkle will ever be available. I don't think i'd be happy letting my new gfx card run at 90c. Think I'll wait to see what ati comes out with. Hopefully they'll have a lower TDP.

    Re: 8800GT Heat

90C is fine for a GPU, they aren't as touchy as CPUs when it comes to a bit of heat. Also, 110W TDP is brilliant for a GPU in it's class, the GTX is 177W and the performance is almost comparable.

Im getting tired of waiting for the sparkle passive now
I think i might get a 8800gt and wacka VF900 or hr-03 on it. I see it has the 8800gt has 7xxx series mounting which is weird!

It's the same mounting holes as the 8600 which is the same as the 7900
