Recomend me a 1920x1200 Monitor

I have decided that I need to leave the dark ages, and replace my good, but bulky 19 inch CRT with a nice flat panel. I have also decided that it has to have at least as many pixels as my CRT was capable of displaying, so that means a 1920x1200 model.

I plan to use it mainly for general desktop usage under linux rather than games or movies, but seeing as it will last a long time I would also like something reasonably future proof.

My default choice would be a Dell 2407WFP-HC from Scan, as it is well regarded, has plenty of input options, and there are loads in the office where I work so I can see how good they are. The problem is that they are expensive.

I have also seen that Tesco are now stocking a Sutable Gateway 24 inch display for two thirds of the price, but the review on anandtech was not that positive.

Anyway, do you know of any other large LCDs that might be suitable. I don't really have a hard budget, but I would need convincing to spend more than about £500, and if I can get a good display for less, then I will.

The 2407's are expensive and it did put me off getting one for a while but I'm glad I took the plunge I've had no problems or complaints about mine and the picture is great. Use it for my xbox360 as well.

Do you know if the stand allows the display to rotate to portrait mode? I find it quite usefull for working on longer documents, especaly when programing.

I got me a HannsG 28" from Pixmania for £403 (might have gone up now). Not a brilliant screen (TN) but lots of real estate for the money. Has HDMI and VGA inputs btw and a pedestrian, industrial design.

Doesn't pivot and no USB hub, certainly can't compete with S-IPS models but you pays your money... worth a ponder anyhow.

Thanks for that, it certainly looks better than the Dell, not least because of the input options. Two HDCP protected inputs, is more than many TVs twice that size. The Reviw on trustedreviews.com was positively glowing. After reading that I won't be buying the Dell, though I might still decide to go for somthing cheaper.

I've heard that Benq make the panels for the Dell screens. I have a 2405 which is nice, I think I paid around £580 for mine only to discover a week later that Dell were doing 2 for £900. Dayamn. 2400x1920

And he has no problems with it great contrast ratio and a vast number of different input options.

Oh and it can spin it to give you a portrait view as well.

Edit - It is actually the W241D, which has a S-PVA panel rather than TN changed the link to represent this.

Thanks, but I would not touch OcUK with a 10ft pole.

In any case that monitor does not have much in the way of input options, and I would prefer to have more, as it gives me some future proofing. Scan have the same monitor for £30 more

I did a google search on it, and the only UK stockist I could find was OcUK who Iwon't touch. They also want arround £460 for it, and at that price point I think the Benq FP241W has a much better specification.

Unless you mean inputs again, then I wouldn't read much into specifications on monitors. There's an increasing number of simply blatant lies (roughly 100% of "gaming monitors" by the looks of it). I'd rely much more on reviews (and mainly group tests) than on specs.

And yeah, those Dell E series of monitors are just poor, on par with the rest of the "gaming monitors". If I was to buy another 24" I'd have absolutely no hesitation in buying the Dell 2407WFP (not the HC as I need VGA+DVI, or 2 DVI), or a 2nd hand 2405FPW. Miles ahead of anything we've got at work (and 1 of my screens there is quite highly rated in itself - ViewSonic VX924). Just my personal opinion.

Hmmm can't remember where my brother got his from... My father has his own PC maintenence business so I would guess it was sourced from one of his suppliers. I will ask when I next speak to them, would be so much easier if I wasn't 100 miles away!

I'm looking at that Benq too for the same reasons, there is also the FP241WZ model.

What about the HDMI input?

We almost forgot about it and we have to say that we haven't been really convinced by its results.

We made several tests with the DVI input of our graphic card, the HDMI input of the monitor and a very good cable (very expensive) connecting the two. No luck, the monitor was no longer recognised in its native resolution, 1920 x 1200 pixels, but rather as a TV, and was restricted to 1920 x 1080. The image was still fully displayed (it wasn't cut as it sometimes happen with TVs) but it wasn't sharp. Interpolation was problematic, which often happens for computer monitors. It introduces a slight blur effect and a noticeable reduction in details.

We used this interface for a couple of minutes to test it, but we quickly went back to DVI
