    Re: gtx260 and 4870

here the full specs of what i intend to get:

    Processor: Intel Core 2 DUO E8400 3.00GHz 6Mb Cache
    Motherboard: ASUS P5E Intel X38 (DDR2)
    Memory: 4GB Corsair TwinX XMS2 DDR2 800MHz
    Case: Hiper Anubis
Hard Drive One (OS): 500GB Samsung F1 SATAII 7200rpm 16mb cache
    Hard Drive Two (DATA): None
Cooling + System Build: Custom Liquid - CPU Only
Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit
Power Supply: 620w Coolermaster Realpower Modular SLi Ready

I have a CRT monitor abour 17-19 "visable screen it will run 1600x1200 MAX res, and i hopeing to get a card ot run games at high graphics but not super high res ie above 1600x1200 which is of course my max.

cooling wise like said CPU watercooled loops, then hybrid anubis case with non stock fans, probaly revotech ones instead.

    Re: gtx260 and 4870

In that case, the HD4870 will probs will do fine as cooling isn't an issue. You may want to upgrade the monitor as CRT probs won't take full advantage of the higher quality the HD/GTX will give you.

    Hope this helps

    Re: gtx260 and 4870

my monitor actualy very good even though is CRT, i ben looking into new monitors but finding a decent one will cost around 400-600 quid, 1600x1200 still pretty good res.

1600x1200 is a very respectable resolution to push the new cards

    Re: gtx260 and 4870

    I am having the same Dilema ! Overclockers have a Leadtek 260 on for £170.36, which is the same price as a 4870 .. . . .
Confused as to why the benchmarks on Hexus all show the 260 being significantly faster, but lots of other websites show the opposite
I usually trust the reviews on Hexus, but not sure now !!

They are both excellent cards. My conclusion from the reviews is that the 4870 is probably the slightly better card in terms of raw performance, but I doubt you'll notice much - if any - difference under real usage.

If you tend not to have your PC on for long periods of time whilst not gaming, then go for the 4870. Otherwise I'd say go for the 260, as it uses about 40 Watts less at idle. I think the 260 is probably also the card of choice for extremely high resolution screens (i.e. 30").

Hexus have a rather strange benchmark selection which skews the picture somewhat. It's fine if you're just playing those games of course!

They've acknowledged the problem and are looking into new benchmarks that we all suggested, though it's taking a while.

    Re: gtx260 and 4870

I'm going for the GTX 260, simply because I like Nvidia more than ATI =P

Also, the 260 supports PhysX and CUDA, which might come in handy in some time (new drivers were released for the 260, which enables PhysX in some games =O but not sure about that, they might be in beta)

Though the thing that bother me a little is, would my GTX 260 fit in the Antec Three Hundred case ^_^
I think it will, since it's about the same size as the 9800GTX and the 8800 series, which are supposed to fit...

Did I not hear roumers about physX being hacked to work on ATI cards, or was I just on the sauce again ?

Yes they've done it, but AMD aren't fussed about physics on GPU just yet.

    Re: gtx260 and 4870

Has anyone seen any info on the 1GB version of the 4870 yet? OcUK say they should have arrived today, but I'm a little suss as none of the benchmark sites have any info on it (here and Anandtech being my main ones). I'm also in this dilema, except gaming at 1920x1200. I expect both would give almost identical performance and woun't really make much difference, but I've spent over a week umming and ahhing over this.

    Re: gtx260 and 4870

    Still on pre-order here:
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/148105

But they've got a number available which suggests they will have stock soonish.

    Re: gtx260 and 4870

That was my thinking, but OcUK were saying they would have them in last week, eBuyer have a number but none of the benchmark sites have info on them - surely they would recieve a reference copy to test before they were released to the general public. At the moment I'm leaning towards the 512MB version - I'm not sure the £40 increase would yield £40 worth of performance, especially considering the fact that the total price is only a little lower than the GTX280.

    Re: gtx260 and 4870

They've also taken down the due date for the cards which is slightly worrying. Ebuyer still have a quantity available listed for pre-order, but there's no indication of when they might be available.

It's all slightly annoying - the HD4870 is a fairly clear winner in most benchmarks when compared to the GTX260, but I'd quite like to at least see how good the 1GB version s before ordering (Murphy's Law I'll order the 512MB one and the 1GB one will be released the next day).

By not ordering it than, you would make Nvidia a bit happier x)
