yeah but they all cost a fortune. tbh unless you really have no space or your just wanting to show off your millions get a good CRT - tfts currently dont come anywhere near interms or picture quality - and theres always the risk of dead pixels with tfts...

The best for gaming are <16ms response time TFT's. anything above this leaves noticeable 'blurring' and trails left behind with quick movements.
Personally I'm sticking with CRT's until TFT's are cheaper/better, but theres some you gotta expect to pay anywhere from £260 - £350 for a <16ms response time TFT.
Theres a Samsung one, a Benq one, hyundai, Iiyama...they all do sub 16ms TFT's. google it!

Stick to CRT for gaming. For the price of a 16ms response TFT (£310-£360) you could buy a top of the range 19" CRT and still have have enough money left over to buy a half decent gfx card.

blimey...negative vibes on the tft front dudes

I was lanning with Moby-Dick this weekend and Ihave a 15" NEC and he has a 17" Hitachi, and both are nice....but as mentioned....you need to get a fast one.

However...a worthy investment, purely for desktop space and lanning

Ilyama give good results.....Hyundais latests rocks too.....Ilyama is used by DirectHex on these forums...and Hyundai by TiG...both of those guys tell it like it is.....expect blunt facts

Im runnin the Hyundia Q17 TFT on my 2nd rig, the picture quality is excellent 20msecs response time, only very slight ghosting in intense fast moving games. CRT are deffo better for gaming on. Dont care what anyone says about no ghosting whatsoever on there fast tfts its still there. I only bought a tft cos i didnt want a hulking great big monitor in me lounge

    Ho hum.

Panels are subjectively measured - most supposed 16msec screens are only 16msec across a short color range - and if you look at the same screen on different countries' homepages, you might find totally different response times.

I use my (old) Iiyama AX3819UT/BK for games - via DVI to the PC, and VGA to the Dreamcast. Housemates own TFTs, totalling 6 desktop TFTs in the house. Of those, the Iiyama E430S/431S and Hitachi have the supposed best response, and there are certainly no complaints about ghosting.

What there ARE complaints of are other auxiliary TFT concerns - screen filtration circuitry, warranty, brightness, etc. On that front the Hitachi is dead in the water - the brightness is FAR too overbright & cannot be changed adequately, the screen filter makes VGA look yucky compared to the Iiyamas, and Iiyama warranties are second to none.

One thing to consider, though, is what the response time equates to in real terms. A 25msec response is 40 FPS. a 20msec is 50 FPS, a 16msec is 60 FPS. "Oh no I need 100 FPS", you may cry - but really, is it strictly neccessary? Transition on a tft from one frame to another is smooth - there is no flickering. Take a handfull of console conversions - the Grand Theft Auto games are locked at 30 FPS, and it certainly doesn't cause pain or suffering. My screen has a quoted 30msec response time, which equates to 33 FPS - and it's FINE for everything I do - office type tasks, watching media, playing games.

So, what's my point? First of all, don't worry about ghosting. If there really IS such a thing on screens developed after 1994. Any screen you buy from a DECENT manufacturer is going to look FINE for gaming or media viewing. You might take half an hour or so to get used to the different way things are drawn on the screen compared to a CRT, but you'll really never want to go back - I can't see myself ever buying a CRT again for any reason anyone could name. Second of all, remember that a TFT is pretty expensive, and that the backlights used have a life of about 4-6 years - at which point they'll need replacing. Thirdly, remember that you HAVE to run EVERYTHING in the native resolution of the screen, or things start to look like ass. That means 1024x768 on 15" screens, 1280x1024 on 17" screens. Be sure that your graphics card will happily run all current titles at that resolution no sweat. One notch down on 256x256 anti-aliasing and 2048x ansiotropic filtering will still look like ass compared to regular setting on native resolution.

Oh, and to sum up, get an Iiyama E431S. They rock

Whatever you get, make sure the TFT has a CVI input and you use it cause VGA is blurry in comparison.

I have an NEC 1760NX which has both VGA and DVI. The DVI is connected to my main rig and the VGA to the server so I can switch between them and the picture sharpness is pretty large considering.

puh. I'm not rich, not trying to show off and have plenty of space, but still went for a tft (granted i'm at uni so a tft helps, but...)

most tfts will give you dual input - so i have 2 pcs connected without the need for a kvm

mine is quoted as 20ms, and it doesn't EVER ghost.

have any of you crt types actually used a tft for reading from? eye strain is entirely non existant

stability, sharpness - far better than any crt i've seen.

if you have the money for a 17'' + lcd, get one. pretty soon you'll be wanting another, and i can tell you - 2 lcds will be SO much nicer to work with than 2 crts or a combination. the bezel on my lcd is less than 3/4''!

When you're thinking about getting a TFT, the best thing to do is to create a short list and then to actually go and check and monitors out for yourself. Reading up reviews, manufacturer's spec pages and noting other people's advice and recommendations are all good, but seeing the monitor for yourself is really the only way to go.
