Excellent. If I know the mobo I want to get can I find out from the manual if the BIOS would support that?

Probably can, I'm sure a quick google would reveal it. Most can though especially ASUS.

    Re: 2 x 4870 in Crossfire OR 4870X2?

the reviews have all stated that the 4870x2 wont see visable differance unless you have super high res, or a 24+" monitor, running 2100+ res.

anything lower or smaller a 4870 will run fine, going crossfire waste of money sinse it isnt as effective as 4870x2 nor worth getting with your monitor.

if you really want high res card with your monitor which wont fully use it up, get a gtx 260 and should run better than 4870 at higher res, though not by loads

Currently eyeing up an Asus P45 P5Q-E or perhaps the Deluxe.

Think I will stick with ATI and the 4870s.

Ta muchly. I do my research.

Whether I get a P5Q-E or the P5Q Deluxe depends on a very important matter!

Do I use the onboard sound in which case I'd want the P5Q Deluxe as the P5Q-E doesn't have a microphone socket but the P5Q Deluxe does. Or should I get a sound card? In which case it'll most likely be an Asus Xonar since the Vista driver support from Creative is meant to be appalling and I'll be running Vista Home Premium x64.

    Hmmn choices!

The Xonar is a very good card, get it if you want EAX in games. Otherwise save the cash

    Re: 2 x 4870 in Crossfire OR 4870X2?

They are all good lol. The D2 has been getting good reviews for offering pretty much all the features at a much lower price. The DX and D2X claim to use better quality chips but the difference is indistinguishable.

I use a D2X and its great especially in Vista. If you use XP then go creative.

    Re: 2 x 4870 in Crossfire OR 4870X2?

With regard to the OP. The additional ram on the X2 should allow it to remain current for longer. Less power and less heat than a couple of 4870's although the 4870 will be easier to sell 2nd hand.

    Re: 2 x 4870 in Crossfire OR 4870X2?

Well turns out like I might have the money sooner that I thought.

Could order very soon but for one conundrum. Buy a 4870 512Mb or wait for a 4870 1Gb? I'm guessing the 1Gb models could be out in a week or two but that the availability means the prices will be quite prohibitive for a few more weeks?

Thinking I should stick witha a 4870 512Mb and then upgrade maybe in Jan/Feb when prices for the 1Gb are better or the cooling on a 4870X2 is better? Just need someone to convince me of what I'm trying to convince myself with.

    Re: 2 x 4870 in Crossfire OR 4870X2?

I'd be happy with a 512mb tbh, but i suppose the 1Gb could be benificial for 1920 x 1200, especially later down the line.

    Re: 2 x 4870 in Crossfire OR 4870X2?

My brother has the 4870 512Mb with a 9450 on XP with 4Gb (He knows that it won't all be used). He's very happy with the framerate on his 24 inch monitor at 1920x1200 so it'll be OK for me. The 1Gb 4870s aren't out yet and I might be ordering pretty soon.
