    Re: Vista affecting aspect ratio?

I have since read that some of these monitors had some erroneous chip inside them which reports the wrong res to the o/s

    Good monitor, but!

The actual resolution of this monitor should be 1600X1050, not 1400x1050!

As with all monitors, there is a slight panel lottery.

    Also.

Some of these monitors suffer from a miss programmed EDID chip. The EDID chip is what tells the computer what resolutions are supported, so the monitor (mistakenly) informs your computer it can only do (in my case) 1400x1050.

The symptoms are a less than crystal clear display, and you should notice if you hold your mouse on the right or left hand side of the screen it will 'scroll' - a bit like pan and scan.

It seems the company that deal with returns on behalf of samsung arn't that good at picking this up, too. I returned my first 205bw because of color banding. I went through 3 replacements before I found one that didn't suffer this bug.

Chances are, they're pluging them in to a test system already configured at 1600x1050 and diagnosing no fault.

You can check this yourself using a program called moninfo, witch will out put your monitors EDID information. Google for it. Googling also shows other people with the same fault.

One of the techs I spoke too said it was 'very unusual' >.> So unusual that I experienced it three times.

But, all said, a good monitor. Vivid colors, nice stand, and a nice configuration utility.
