I consider the minimum playable FPS for my games to be:~30
I consider the maximum FPS that I can perceive to be happening:~70
I consider the 'limit' the eye can see to be around 30FPS: no
I consider the 'limit' the eye can see to be around 60FPS: no
I consider the 'limit' the eye can see to be higher than 60FPS: yes

I've used a lab strobe in the past that's good to 300Hz, I can "see" up to 250Hz using that thing but hell it makes me nauseous.

Re: How many FPS do you consider minimum in a game?

I consider the minimum playable FPS for my games to be: 24 (can be lower depending on game and situation, my absolute lowest on some MMOs have been 12, however I question that as I've done stop frame animation in my past and games at 12fps should be far more jerkey than a game reporting 12fps)

I consider the maximum FPS that I can perceive to be happening: 40ish

I consider the 'limit' the eye can see to be around 30FPS: no

I consider the 'limit' the eye can see to be around 60FPS: pass see below

I consider the 'limit' the eye can see to be higher than 60FPS: my cheap monitor doesn't like running past 60hz the few games I've tried to run without V-sync which give me well inexcess of 60fps become torn which wipes out any additional "smoothness" than the high frame rates could give.

I would like to point out here that many game engines now use "hidden" adaptive graphics and will reduce the number of effects and partical counts and LOD* numbers on-the-fly to smooth out fps and keep the fps higher.

    * Level of detail, this is a common term refureing to draw distance and a combination of texture size + model complexity (poly count) and particals (note that partical systems are used for all sorts of things in games, from smoke, and fire all the way down to blades of grass)

Re: How many FPS do you consider minimum in a game?

    I consider:
the minimum playable FPS for my games to be: 30 (tho RTS can be low 20s without too much problem)
the maximum FPS that I can perceive to be happening: 60, mostly cos the only thing i can run in the 100's of fps is quake3...
the 'limit' the eye can see to be around 30FPS: no - only with films / motion blurring
the 'limit' the eye can see to be around 60FPS: no
the 'limit' the eye can see to be higher than 60FPS: yes - see above

Re: How many FPS do you consider minimum in a game?

I consider the minimum playable FPS for my games to be: anything that works.. I've played morrowind at 1 frame per minute, and crysis at an average of 5fps,(not on the same PC) I'm just happy if the screen shifts some pixels around when i press the movement keys. most games play around 20-30fps on my current decrepit rig.

I consider the maximum FPS that I can perceive to be happening: no idea, i barely get past 50fps in games from the turn of the millenium. on my mate GEB's computer i noticed when it went past 80.. more tests are required to get a better answer.

I consider the 'limit' the eye can see to be around 30FPS: NO

I consider the 'limit' the eye can see to be around 60FPS: NO

I consider the 'limit' the eye can see to be higher than 60FPS: YES

Re: How many FPS do you consider minimum in a game?

I consider the minimum playable FPS for my games to be: Dependent on game type, I could live with 20fps but on a fast first person shooter, it comes down to higher frame rates, the better (or at least hitting the quirky numbers that give you that extra jump height in quake based games).
I consider the maximum FPS that I can perceive to be happening: Tough one...I could tell the difference between 76fps and 125fps (locked) when playing the old Elite Force game BUT that could be down to how the monitor was displaying those frames as it was capped at 60Hz. I would quite possible say somewhere between 20-30fps is what the human eye can percieve. My theory is based on how the monitor displays the fps based on the refresh rate and how that fits or does not fit with the 20-30fps percieveable fps.
I consider the 'limit' the eye can see to be around 30FPS: yes
I consider the 'limit' the eye can see to be around 60FPS: no
I consider the 'limit' the eye can see to be higher than 60FPS: no

    EDIT:
My theory is based from the actual viewing area the eyes sees at any given moment against what our brain percieves we view.

Its so interesting seeing the huge variation in results, even on a forum that has plenty of enthusiasts. Certainly a very subjective subject

Yes, I've been a pratt and said yes to the last three, because it depends on techniques used to display what you're seeing, and things such as motion blur - or lack thereof - which can require higher FPS to appear 'right'.

Whether agent comes back with that... who knows.
    PHP Code:

    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    It's my answer obviously

Guessing it might be a "it varies from person to person" answer.

I consider myself quite lucky, I can't see monitor flicker on old CRTs either which saved me some money in the past
