    Time To Upgrade Dell 2405?

I have had my Dell 2405 for 3 1/2 years and been very pleased with it. After reading an article in custom PC a couple of months ago and having a birthday recentley I am thinking of a change. I guess my thoughts are these.................Are the monitors of today MUCH better (sharper/faster/exhibit more depth than my 2405 ? My habits tend to be towards WoW/Web/Wow/Web and occaisional Iplayer.

If anyone made the upgrade from the 2405 or can comment on improvements I would be most grateful

Re: Time To Upgrade Dell 2405?

The 2405 was one of the best TFT's in its time. While it's certainly not the best today, budget models still don't beat it.

I have a Samsung 2343NW next to my Dell 2405. Apart from resolution, the 2405 beats it in every way. This is mainly due to it being a cheap TN panel though to be fair.

Don't be afraid to replace it, but make sure that you don't think that technology has come on so much that a new cheap TFT will beat this expensive one thats a fair bit older - they wont

Re: Time To Upgrade Dell 2405?

It was the fault of damned Custom PC - I really should stop my subscription. I saw the reviews for the HP 24 and the NEC 24 and I really wanted an opinion to the benefits of the new 'high end' 24 inch monitors compared to my trusty 2405 - which TBH is still great. But if I can get better colours/colour depth, sharper resolution, faster refresh....................

The biggest problem with monitors is seeing them in operation before you take the plunge!

Re: Time To Upgrade Dell 2405?

Hmmmmmm makes for interesting reading. What i'd really like to find is a reputable review with the 2405 v the latest HP and NEC - However what that article does say to me is maybes be happy with my 2405!

Re: Time To Upgrade Dell 2405?

At work, my old 2405 made a nice "BANG" noise last summer, and was replaced (a month inside the warranty expiry) with a 2407. I've also got a 2408 (at home). To be honest, yeah, they're both a bit brighter, and once calibrated, they provide a bit more depth to colour (the 2408 was horribly over-saturated until I bought a Spyder 3 Pro), but I'd still be happily using the 2405 now without any issue had it not died.

If you're heavily into graphics or photo editing then maybe it would be a slightly more tempting recommendation, but given your usage, I'd just use this until it dies and then replace it. You never know - OLED might just be touching a reasonable price by then...

Sleep safely in the knowledge that it's still a hell of way above the average quality for monitors.

Re: Time To Upgrade Dell 2405?

If you are doing any colour critical work the HP LP2475W has an H-IPS panel and is supposed to be quite good:

    http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/hp_lp2475w.htm

You can get it for under £400 from the HP website with a discount code(and Quidco?) according to some posters on this forum IIRC.

Thats just it, I think that maybe 3 years later, I must be missing out, when in fact if you could walk into a shop and look at the products side by side - or at least rationally you could make an informed decision and rason that there is no need to blow 200 - 300 upgrading! Damn the infidel Custom PC

It's odd, but monitors are the one thing I don't get upgrade fever about. I love my Dell 1908FP at work, and I adore my 17" Iiyama CRT at home (I'm going to be *very*sad when that finally gives up the ghost). Even the cheap (well, comparitively, at the time... ) 26" TFT TV I bought 4 years ago is more than adequate for my needs. Everything else I've had has been upgraded at some time or another, but the monitors just live on

If you want to upgrade, and with the 2405 I think it is hardly a requirement, I would recommend one of the following:

    Dell 24" Ultrasharp (VA) @ £442.16

    Dell 27" Ultrasharp (VA) @ £540.48

I tend to agree - I do love my 2405 - and had an Iiyama 17 and 19" CRT before - in fact the 19" is still in the roof (Too bloody heavy to move ) Just after reading the Custom PC minitor grouptest I felt I might be missing out

Quite fancy the 27 - but heard a few nasty things about backlighting - and like you say have decided that theres nothing 'worth' the cost of changing to - now off to cancel that subscription................

I'm going to be making my own new build soon, and there's only one 24" choice for me - the HP LP2475W. Straight from HP, 10% code and a further 8% off via cashback site.
