    Not Post With HD4870

When i connect my force3D HD4870 512mb to computer the computer won't boot all the fans just go mental and keep going at full rpm, and a red light appears on the back of the card near the power connectors, it is the second of four and it is labeled D601. What does this mean and what can be done about it? The rest of the computor works as i have connected an old graphics card (Ati X300) i had laying around to it and it all works using that.

I have a Q6600 at 3.0GHz on a Asus P5Q Pro Mobo, i have updated the bios to the newest.

What power supply do you have? I am assuming that you dont have enough power, aslo are both connectors connected to the 4870? without both it wont boot.

I have a Corsair HX 650W. It used to run fine but i had to RMA the mobo but when i refitted the graphics card in the replacement (which was the same as the first) i keep getting this problem.

I think your right on the line there with a 650W, you may need a little more.

    Re: Not Post With HD4870

650W is more than sufficient to run a single 4870 - I have a 650W running my ancient 8800GTX and they were real power hogs! I don't suppose you can try the card in a different computer to see if it's a card problem or a mobo problem?

    Re: Not Post With HD4870

as he said there /\ 650 is perfect as it's a proper psu unit, not some cheap old piece of tat

(and : top secret: i run a quad core, and 3 hdd and a 4870 toxic on a 400w silvrstone psu, and its rock)
    Must be summit else.

So, you've had a new mobo.. might have helped a tad if you'd mentioned that it was A: working before, and B: wasn't working with the new mobo.

Which begs the question WHY did the motherboard get swapped and DID it kill the card when it died?

    Re: Not Post With HD4870

I killed the mobo by wiring some speakers the wrong way and i blew the onboard sound chip . The computer was still running fine just with no sound so i guess it didn't take out the gpu. I guess there isn't anything wrong with the new mobo as my ati x300 works fine in it. I have found out that the light that comes on is something to do with overheating with would make sence why the fans go mental on the card when i turn it one so i guess the temp sensor is broken. I would try it in anouther computor but the cards to big to fit in my other comps case . I guess im going to have to RMA it.

I had that problem (did not check that it was D601 though) and I just switched the two power connectors which feed into the graphics card around and it has not happend since - wierd - i can only think something was not properly connected or the swap over alllowed power to feed in better i.e. less other connections branching off power cable from PSU to graphics card
