GTX 480 released.... GTX 285 prices not going down!

    Hi,

Checking this page on eBuyer: http://www.ebuyer.com/search?page=5&...celow&limit=10

one can see that GTX 260 cards with 216 shaders is around £160-ish.... good, nice upgrade from my 8800GT.

However, here's the thing: the GTX 285 - only 24 extra shaders, and a touch more clock-speed that can be nullified by overclocking - is almost £300! What?

I was hoping the release of Fermi would let me get the GTX 285 at the £150-200 mark.. is that feasible? I know it hasn't been hard-launched yet, but pre-orders are still being taken at eBuyer, with the GTX470 going for £300-ish...

Again, similar story on overclockers.co.uk and scan.co.uk... they will put the GTX 285 down in price at SOME point right?

    Thanks

p.s. Yes, I'm also considering ATI, I just wondered if anybody knew what the story was with these cards.

Pro tip: No one is surprised that the prices aren't going down. also doesn't the GTX 285 have a 512-bit bus along with more RAM ?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Re: GTX 480 released.... GTX 285 prices not going down!

£150-200? Not a chance at the moment IMO. The 470 is about 10-30% faster depending on applications, so I may see the price drop to £250 on average (£225-275) at best (even that's pushing it I think). Besides, even if demand decreases as a result of the new cards/AMD alternatives, supply will too.

Re: GTX 480 released.... GTX 285 prices not going down!

Yes remember stock of the new cards are not expected in the EU for 2 weeks

At the morment nvidia just stinks above £100, with the 5770 giveing around the same performance as the gtx260 but costing around £135 (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/191864 £128.26 for cheapest 1gb version)
ATM the only nvidia cards I'd recomend are the gts250 if you can find a sub £100 (80-90) and the 9800gt around £70
the gtx260 only if you can find far closer to £130

There are also a few 4850 (around £80) or the 4870 or 4890 for sub £130 around which are worth looking at
As far as the £150-200 range goes I can advise nothing, as the options are frankly rubbish.

Says it all really. Just because something new is out, it doesn't mean the older hardware prices instantly drop.

    It's 4.98*

Yeah, but that comes with a free gamepad!!!!

Actually, if I had a normal X1900 I'd be tempted by a crossfire version - although not necessarily at £140...

^ And I think that's at least one of the reason e-tailers don't just dump the stock before a card is completely obsolete. They are probably counting on someone wanting to badly SLI/Crossfire.

Re: GTX 480 released.... GTX 285 prices not going down!

The price of these cards was rising a lot before the launch though..

My GTX275 was £155 and that was CHEAP as hell only a couple of months ago..

Re: GTX 480 released.... GTX 285 prices not going down!

Dont forget that the stock of the older GTX chips is limited and (as your showing) there si still demand for tehm so why would a retailer lose money by cutting the prices??

Why buy a 285 when the 5870 is faster and more futureproof??

Might want a NVIDIA feature? CUDA is pretty good to have, expecially if more companies decide to adopt it...

I honestly see CUDA being some what of a short term solution before OpenCL or Directx 11 CS becomes more widely adopted. Hopefully it will be OpenCL as a greater quantity of older generation hardware will support it.

Yeah, I'd rather it was something all companies can support.. Then there's more chance of companies adopting it.

I just want GPU acceleration of everything!!

You and me both my friend!

Both companies (Nvidia and ATI/AMD) are currently supporting OpenCL so more support from software companies would be nice

Play.com had an unbranded GTX 285 for sale a few months ago for £200. I was sorely tempted but I didn't really need it.

Linux drivers has always been the killer for me.

Charlie Demerjian, that great fan of Nvidia, said ages ago that AMD were now taking Linux drivers seriously but I have yet to see anyone raving about AMD Linux drivers.

Hmm, do you think we could get Charlie and Rollo in the same room? Would make for an amusing argument

From benchmarks I have seen, Nvidia GPU's demolish ATI GPU's at OpenCL tasks.
That said, I'd not muy a current Nvidia GPU and am perfectly happy with my 4870 ta very much
