TBH, I think you should save up around £300 and get a new CPU,motherboard,RAM and a retail copy of an OS. A Core i3 2100 or a Phenom II X4 955BE will be fine for most games. The current socket 1155 motherboards supposedly will work with Ivy Bridge and the AM3+ motherboards will work with Bulldozer. The sockets are relatively new so it means you will have an upgrade path open to you.
Of course you could wait another two to three months and see how Bulldozer performs. Llano is out next week although it uses socket FM1.
Watforddude you don't need to download your Steam games, they should just run fine with a new install.
