Re: "My soon to be built dual NV45 will kick *anything* on the market to the dust. From *anyone*"

And would that require PCIe, or is it a dual GPU card? If it's the former, then that's one hell of an expensive upgrade! :-) And how soon is soon? I got my 6800GT for Doom3 and HL2, which should both be out in the next month or so. Can't see nv45 until Xmas at the very earliest, no matter what "Jen-Hsun" told you (jeez, he's never been accurate in the past, and look how long it's taken to get the current next-gen cards out...)

Think I'll stick with what I have until nv50 or better ships.

Still, it'll be nice to see what your rig can do, when you *finally* get it. :-)

I think its pretty cool that nvidia finally game back on track, even if it is only Doom3 and maybe HL2 at the moment. ATI was very dominating for quite some time. I mean the 9700 Pro and the 9800 Pro were very good. The 5950 or the 5800 and things like that were terrible compared to the ATI cards.

    Competition is very good :-)

But the linux drivers from ATI really just suck, i hope my quadro2 next week wont gimme any probs :-)

NVIDIA has always been very good with OpenGL, even with the FX line of cards. I suspect that ATI will perform better by a decent margin in HL2.

It's defiantly good to see that NVIDA is back in the game, will force ATi to lower prices much sooner and everyone will benifit.

With the Benchmark results for Doom3 i was shocked at how badly the X800 did against the 6800, and i thought well it looks like my next card is Nvidia based.

But then i read all the information i could and it seems that Nvidia designed there latest video card on the recommendations set by John carmack for use with the Doom3 engine.

It seems to me that there isnt much ATI can do against this as a lot of the features of Doom 3 are what are included in the 6800 design i.e. ultra shadow II & 32x0

All they can do is improve there OpenGL performance and make sure the R500 has these features or equivelent.

But to be honest i'd wait a few months before i decided to upgrade (Or perhaps even a year) as i've gone down that route before upgrading just to play one game i.e. Doom3 (geforce 3) HL2 (9800 pro) and now both of these cards are not enough to run either at there highest settings

I'll wait until both games are out and have been patched up a few times before i decide which card to upgrade to and even then i might wait for the R500 or whatever nvidia's model is by then.

If i use this Quote from ATI as an example of what waiting a little while longer before upgrading can produce. (This is for Far cry)

SM3.0 includes instancing, a feature nvidia have promoted heavily, saying that it proves the superiority of their hardware - while this is certainly a major talking and selling point, all X800 cards (and even 9500,9600,9700,9800) are capable of instancing. We have a beta driver in our possession which reflects this and associated performance gains, and it will be in the publicly posted CATALYST 4.8. We dont feel until a final patch is available from Crytek we should post our detailed findings as there is every possibility between now and the next release this could change.

We can give you rough indications of percentage increases - on the research map with Far Cry v1.2 \r_sm2bpath 1 and HLSL compiler profile 2.0b we saw increases of 13% at 1024x768, 21% at 1280x1024 and 25% at 1600x1200. Nothing to be sniffed at."

Taken From this thread at Rage3d

You've also got New OpenGL drivers being written for the Catalyst drivers, and there is also Temporal AA which is available for DX and OGL so holding onto my existing ATI card before deciding which videocard i upgrade will give me some free speed increases and perhaps another 6 - 12 months out of my card before i emptying my wallet (Again).

But i must admit 3dc and SM3.0 all look scrummy, but then so did T&L, PS and truform

P.S. also a quick thought is how many games are coming out using the Doom 3 engine and how many for the Halflife 2 engine?, dont you think this could swing your opinions on which videocard you will get??

Also to add to what i have said here's a review by driver heaven of the 6800 ultra versus the X800 XTPE

    http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews/6800andX800XT

All these benchmarks are Direct X based and the X800 wins quite a few of them, if Doom 3 never came out then nearly every one would pick the X800 as there next upgrade, but because of ATI's bad OpenGL performance in Doom 3 and the 6800 being designed for it, then the question of which card to upgrade to begin's to get very confusing..

But it all comes down to games in the end and getting the ultimate experience, if loads of games and mods come out for Doom 3 then i would buy a 6800, but if ATi beats Nvidia in benchmarks for Half life 2 by a large margin and loads of Mods and games based on that engine came out then i think i'd buy a x800.

    Oh im so confused

Well i think that counterstrike2 will use the HL2 engiene, which would properbly favour ATI. I heard that Quake 4 will use the Doom3 engiene which would currently favour nVidia. I think that by the time i am willing to spend a lot of money on a comp again, they will have new cards out with wich i can play Doom3 and HL2 at the highest settings.... and then ill join in again on the next discussion when the new Doom4 and HL3 are out and my GeForce 80000 is a little faster then the new ATI Hyper 70000 lol ;-)

I've got the money saved up myself for a new computer but i feel like we are in a transition period between 32 & 64bit, AGP & PCI express, ATX & BTX, Audigy 2 & there next PCI express based soundcard e.t.c. e.t.c.

And except for the 6800 being a new design the x800 is just a very fast refresh of the 9800 xt.

It's definetly and exciting time to be a part of just wish it would speed up a little.

Well back to the topic, yeah Counterstrike 2 not a big fan but that will sway a lot of people to ATI i think, but Quake 4 that would sway me towards a 6800 based card.

tillyoubreakit - Ooooh, Electrostatics Do they sound good?

Personally I'm still supporting Nvidia because of better driver support (Linux) and I just generally prefer them. As I don't play many games I have no intention of upgrading at the moment as these new games still play on my system - just not flat out

This sort of two company war is good to a point - don't forget both ATi and Nvidia went down the slippery route of cutting corners Esp in there drivers.
