iirc DoomIII is not using OpenGL it's using DX
there for if ati are getting beat in both DX and OpenGL it will be time for me to switch back to Nvidia.
btw the performace of ATI under linux is utter crud, a TI4200 performs better under linux then a 9800pro !
I thought nVidia was extreme at OpenGL and Doom III is rendered in Open GL hence why they're buying nVidia cards?
D3 is OGL.

Most likely another developer will wrap it with DirectX. Unless MS have conceded and theres an ability to bundle an OGL driver with games.Originally Posted by Kez
You might just be guessing?
*ahem*
I can't see any reason why there wouldn't be an opengl driver available for the xbox, it's only running a tweaked geforce3..

Well, Microsoft does sit on the OpenGL board as well, if it's not there already (which I'd be very surprised if it wasn't), all they'd have to do is port the code..

ATi fanboys will say that hopefully the next sets of ATi drivers will address their OpenGL issue and pull back some ground......but they don't take into consideration that during that time, nVidia will probably have released numerous sets of drivers already that would have increased their performance edge in Doom3 even further......
Apparently ATi are now rewriting the OpenGL driver from scratch after not touching it since the closure of the FireGL office..
Besides, OpenGL performance isn't everything, and these days there are many more games that use DX over OGL..
Horses for courses, the X800 will own the 6800 series on some games, nVidia will have the upper hand on others, no big deal

nVidia are lucky to release 5 driver sets a year, and you think that several are going to be released before Doom III?? ATI will release a driver set and it may not be as good in open gl, but id still like to see any of the two cards in my system for playing DIII!
As most of you guys know, im not a NV fanboy, im not a ATi fanboy, ill buy whats best at the time. But despite all the Ati users rabbiting on about how good Ati's drivers now are....well.....i dont agree.Originally Posted by Applecrusher
They are still worse than Nvidias.
As you said, ATi have to release many more driver releases a year. Not many of these add a significant FPS gain to games (im talking about >5 to 10fps consistantly), but they are needed to fix compatibility problems with titles.
Nv dont have to release as many drivers as Ati, because quite simply, they dont need to.
My FX5950ultra has had far far fewer driver issues compared to my 9800pro (even though the 9800pro was far superior when using AA and AF at almost any res.)
And im not bringing building systems for other people into this...
Have you tried to explain how to update drivers to somone who just wants to play a game they brought from the high-street ? The average Jo dont have a clue.
Im not saying Ati's drivers are bad. They are MUCH better than they used to be.
They have proved they are getting better and better by acctually fixing the bugs they have in their drivers. But, it dont matter how much people try to hide it, Nv dont have to update their driverset as much because they do not have these problems....
As for which card im buying ?
-Whichever is the cheepest
What is it with you people? Let me just check - is anyone who says anything about any aspect of any card, a fanboy? Apparently, you are now a 'fanboy' (horrible, overused word) if you say that the next set of ATi drivers will close the gap on the Nvidia cards.Originally Posted by Proplus
Its a perfectly sensible thing to say. Personally, I can't see why anyone saying or thinking that would be a fanboy.
Actually, I'll say it now - hopefully, the next set of ATi drivers will close the gap on Nvidia in OpenGL performance.
Have I said anything wrong? Anything that makes me sound like a fanboy? Didn't think so.
Time to stop throwing this word around I think. Its starting to get on my nerves now.
I'd like to think, due to the general standard of users and the standard of discussion those users generate, we have very few, if any, fanboys, who blindly see the positives in one card whilst ignoring the negatives.
Think before typing please lads.
I'm with Agent on this one; price is my top concern, as I'm upgrading my whole system as I'm waiting for my new card to arrive. Got a nice price on an X800XT-PE, £320. I wont be moving from that, I don't think. Also don't fancy getting a new PSU either, as my Antec 350w SmartBlue is a great runner.
Now, if only it would come into stock...
