I have HL2 installed, but when I go to video options it says I only have harwdare support for directx 8.1. Is there a way I can confirm my card is working fine with directx 9?
I have ran dxdiag, 3dmark 2005 and have found nothing to confirm it is only half life that has the problem.
I have installed 66.93, 67.02 det drivers with directx 9c but no success.

Unfortunately valve push this card to dx8.1, cause the dx9 shaders have an awful performance hit on these cards.
You can force dx9 but expect to see anything up to a 70% performance hit - check out the article on midrange cards on anandtech.

It even looks good in DX7 mode IMO (not as good obviously - and I suspect there's a much more obvious difference in quality when you look at the game moving... but impressive all the same)

I must say I'm rather impressed with my 9600 Pro's handling of it in DX9 mode. Shame the FX's were never that good at DX9. Still, valve have made a decent engine and it looks good in just about any mode

The 6xxx range are pretty good
The 6xxx's aren't in the FX range
