Post your X800XT PE or modded X800PRO>XT results here!
Well, some of you know i've had an X800Xt PE on order for what seems like centuries, and today it finally found it's way to my grubby little mitts, muahahaha.
The first thing you notice when you take it out of the box, apart from a sudden and mysterious heavenly chorus, is it's size. It's... well ... its as small as a 9800PRO, and the 6800GT is considerably larger when you put them side by side (sorry, forgot to take pics before I installed the card, lol).
Anyway, I decided that for drivers i'd give the Cat 4.8's a whirl seeing as they're meant to be quite good, and yes they are currently BETA.
Anyways, first I ran some Far Cry benchies and compared them to the 6800U set I ran...

Now these scores aren't meant as a definitive performance guide, they're blatantly not. I've yet to finish tweaking and optimizing the settings on this X800XT PE, and im also beginning to mess around with SM2.0b which should speed Far Cry up. But as an average, out of the box performance guide it does the job. Bear in mind the 6800GT is using SM3.0 in those benchies. I'm also going to test OpenGL performance of Far Cry on the X800, should be a laugh if anything.
As for 3DMARK2001, I got an instant 2'000 point increase over my 6800GT running at 415/1120, not bad at all and shows the muscle that this card has! Re-ran the test several times and the score was consistent.
In 3DMARK2003 I gained about 400 points over the 6800GT, nothing earth-shattering but running all max details in the control panel so a nice gain.
Now here's where my misgivings begin. When I loaded up Warhammer 40k - DOW at 1600*1200 4xAA 8xAF I instantly noted significantly lower framerates than I got with my 6800GT, enough to slow the game down to 15fps in some cases. :whailin When I had my 6800GT installed, the game ran silky smooth at those settings and barely dropped below 30fps. Now i'm sure this is a DirectX game so I just have trouble figuring out why the X800XT is having problems with it, and serious problems at that. If the GT can manage to keep a high frame rate at those setting in a DirectX game then the X800XT should have no trouble keeping up. It could naturally be a driver issue, so in the next week i'll experiment with different sets and see if I can iron out a few issues.
Also, playing Far Cry I noticed missing textures and other graphical glitches, mostly on the ground and water. Parts of it would go smooth and detail-less as I looked down at it, enough to get severely annoying after a while. Frame-rates were also not as consistent as my 6800GT, and it dipped below 30fps more than a few times @ 1600*1200 4xAA 4xAF. Again, this sounds like a driver issue so is hopefully easily solveable, i've seen reviewers getting great results on Far Cry with weaker hardware than me so i'll have to do some tweaking.
Image Quality is superb in all games, in fact i'm sure than games look a bit sharper and clearer, especially 3DMARK'03 for some reason. Far Cry looks stunning, just as it did with the 6800GT, except it just seems a little more vibrant. lol this could be purely psychological, but it did seem to be a recurring thought.
Sorry theres not more games to test with there, i'm going to run some more benchies and update soon, I get Doom 3 to play with on Monday so I can see how it fares there, using the Cat 4.9 BETA's, which supposedly increase performance in OpenGL a fair bit.
If anyone has anything they'd like to see, or has any suggestions that are in my power to carry out (i.e. whether I have the software or not) then feel free to pipe up with your squeaky little voice and let me know. I need to run some AA/AF benchies for 3DMARK but tonight I really can't be arsed, lol, i'll do it tommorrow most likely.
Needless to say, overclocking is still to come...
Cheers for now,
Rich.
