thx for ure support there that explains it exactly, a 2 year old cold thats still going hasnt caused me any problems and still isnt really lower classed or a poor performance card. meh thx for ure post anyways...

I think you'll find that your 9600xt will not outperform a softmodded 9500 which is for all intents and purposes a 9700, especially when running the clocks I'm running. As for helping leeboh, I can't see how stating that some cards do more than others, overclocks aren't guaranteed and that he's been unlucky isn't helping. He certainly doesn't have a faulty card. I spend quite a lot of time helping people on here, whereas I've hardly seen great contributions from yourself.

hmm perhaps because i am new to these forums... and due to the fact that ive read on other forums that 9700's can be clocked higher than i have manage to reach, other methods are used to get there, and the reason for this thread is to see what people have found possible to reach and what methods they've used, not their opinions based on my card.

That's a bit better than it managed in my computer though, have you upped the cooling on it? I've had an arctic cooler sitting on my desk for the last two months, but I'm too scaredy to fit it in case I terminally knacker my hard disk in the process, it doesn't like being moved.

leeboh, you could consider getting an Arctic Cooler for your card, that might get your core overclock higher? They're only about a tenner, so you've not lost much if it doesn't help. The cooler on the Maya I found a picture of just looks like the stock ATi design, albeit that it's gold, it could be a bit marginal. I have a softmod 9500 like Zathras, and at 300MHz core if I touch the back of the card behind the core it's hot enough to burn my finger!. That probably won't help your memory out though, there's not really much you can do about that, short of voltmodding the card maybe.

ROFL @ this, his softmodded 9500 would give your 9600 a thorough beating. I reckon he'd get 6000+ in 3DMark '03 vs less than 4000 for you. Turn on eye candy like AA and the difference would be even greater thanks to the fact his card has more than twice as much memory bandwidth as yours.

no im still running stock cooling for gfx so thanks for that rave, ill look into that a bit further at first i didnt expect cooling to be such an issue as the case itself is around 40degrees but thats the case not the gfx soo... yeh ill look into some reviews for gfx card coolers possibly suited for overclocking?? Thanks

Like I say you can't go far wrong with the arctic cooler. It might even lower your case temps since it blows hot air out the back of your case. At one point PC World were doing them for less than a tenner. Having looked on Ebuyer, it seems that they might have replaced it with a newer model but they still look like they'll work well.

    Overclockers.co.uk product details ---
    Arctic Cooling Rev.4 ATI 1 (9600/9700/9800) VGA Silencer (HS-002-AR)
The Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 1 is ideal for ATI Radeon 9600/9700/9800 based graphic cards. It offers substantially better cooling performance over the ATI reference cooler. With the Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer makes use of DHE (Direct Heat Exhaust) system. This carries the warm exhaust air directly from inside the case, thus the inside case temperatures are lower. By the large aluminum radiator box with copper base plate it needs only a slowly turning exhaust fan, in order to keep things cool. Thus operating at a very low noise level!

hmm current main option, just debatting its size and if it will fit between the sound card..

I haven't seen any reviews of the Rev4. For the money the Rev3 looks like a bargain though.

I wouldn't be entirely sure that your lack of overclock would be down to temperature issues. There are numerous other factors that can affect whether a chip will overclock, and the inability of your board to do much over stock at what seems like a low temperature makes me think that an improved cooler may not solve your problems or give you a much better clock. I had a GF2 that only did about 10mhz over stock, and tried fitting a huge socket A HSF to it that used to cool my 1ghz Athlon fine. I couldn't even squeeze an extra mhz out of it. Have you tried your board in a different motherboard? Anyway, good luck with it, hope you manage to get some extra. The Arctic Cooling is a great product anyway, even if you don't. It's much quieter than the stock fan.

Rave, it's now fitted with an Arctic Cooling but I could push the card up quite high with just the stock card. Still getting the odd chequerboard in Windows JPEGs occasionally and some games like GTA3 won't run with the soft-mod at all - strange as Doom 3, HL2, Farcry etc, all the eyecandy games using all the shaders etc work fine.
