After some sleep and more googling the internet seems to concur it's an inductor and that they tend to blow. A few almost identical pic's to yours. Apparently that whole area was cheaped out on and furmark likes to kill them. https://www.google.co.uk/webhp?hl=en...n+1r0+inductor

If it just died of old age/heavy use I'd say a fix would likely work, but it could of been blown by a problem somewhere else in the card in which case replacing it will get you nothing but a puff of white smoke.

Given it's such a high end card and apparently a common problem shooting an email to gigabyte might be worth a go. Also are you sure it's out of warranty? even if it was bought at launch it would be just under 4 years old and their standard warranty is 3 years. Email: returns@gbt-tech.co.uk
Thanks for all that info, it does seem like a very common fault on these cards. I'll go down the warranty route 1st, if that fails then I'll see if my mate can help out, failing that then it's in the bin.

*Edit* Judging by the stickers on the back, looks like it has a production date of 04/2013, so there may be some chance of warranty support. Lets see what Gigabyte say.

Let us know how you get on, I'm curious how gigabyte will respond and if the repair will work.

If not warranty, then find someone who can do SM repairs and bung one of these in

I always wonder how possible it is to do manual repairs on a multi-layer PCB - do they just ensure the components only go into the outside layers?

Inductors shouldn't wear out so if it's popped, there will probably be something else wrong. Unless, of course, it was incorrectly speced at the start.

Agreed but this seems to be a common fault on GTX Titan cards and in my case it would appear that the PSU is faulty as well.

On most of the power stuff, yeah, and normally there's a bit of room around them with no traces, just like the motherboard mounting holes etc. I used to replace capacitors all the time on all kinds of things, it's a doddle. I got so sick of doing it I now won't buy anything without solid caps and tbh they're ever more common nowadays.

If it was the PSU that did it, the weakness in that inductor might of allowed it to basically act like a fuse, saving the rest of the card. Although of course they could just both be broke at the same time and unrelated.

Saved by a design flaw, that would be ironic.

If someone can test/confirm that component isn't damaged and you get nowhere with Gigabyte, you can always bung it in the oven and try a gas mark five reflow - as a last resort.

I've fixed two cards that way.

Re: Gigabyte GTX Titan Completely Dead, No Power

*Update* so I've heard back from Gigabyte and the card is in warranty till April but they can only attempt a repair and not replace if it's not deemed repairable due to me not being able to provide a receipt, which is fair enough. So I think I'll let them have a crack at it first.

Gigabyte are supposed to have relatively good UK support, so I'll also be interested to hear how you get on with the repair.

Also in further news it would appear that the PSU is not faulty, as last night I put in another GPU (which I didn't mind if it blew up) and the PSU powered that one up fine and it benchmarked with no issues. Wierd

Can't say fairer than that I suppose. Least you know the repair will be getting done right.
