a chart with the 'other' company's cards in it too

he he, just winding, looks like a nice round-up and i would have to say the x800xl in agp looks tough to beat if you can stretch to it?

I think I would keep the 9800 Pro long as it is working smoothly till you can buy the 6800GT or better where it be a ATI or Nvidia. The waitting is the hard part, but I thank you will be happy camper if you can hold out abit longer.

the 9800pro is a stonkingly good card. to be honest upgrading will cost a fortune at the moment with little visible difference. it certainly won't change how the game is played. remember that the 9800 was the ati flagship card...so its none too shabby at seeing off the competition. ok, times change and things get updated [god knows it in the computer world!] but an update on the 9800pro, in my mind, is not a significant leap for the cost involved. wait for prices to start falling. the 9800pro is now around £120...it used to be somewhere much higher when it began its life!!

I thought about it - but it is a tall order right now

The HEXUS test on X800 said that it '...hands 6600GT its ass...'

The X800XL gives solid competition to the 6800GT - but for much less money

The X850XT costs the same as a 6600GT SLi set up (possibly slightly less if you look at power supplies and mainboard - but let's say that they are the same for the sake of discussion)... and there is not a single test that I have seen in which the X850XT is not faster - including Doom 3

X850 XT PE is the fastest card in the market - so there is no competition there either

You could try and create a balance but - at the moment - without putting more cards into the field - it is very difficult to rate anything ahead of these 4

The AGP market has been different - and that is one area where the ATI options have not been as string as we would have liked - but that is changing now and we expect the AGP products to perform very well in up-coming reviews...

...which only leaves the entry level where 32-bit TurboCache with be battling ATI's 64-bit HyperMemory solution

i have to agree with you on that lot, it is nice to see ati flying high again, i'm no fanboy of anysort and have used more ati cards than nvidia in the past, but i tend to buy whatever's the fastest for the money at the time (im a student you see- 4th year now so getting poorer ) but as you said:

just that i thought it was about agp cards as the afforementioned 9800pro was pre pci-e. this still may all change when we see the ati cards en mass in agp, but i still think that for now there is some competition left!

I would look at it like this.

I'm picking Dabs only as a place of reference, so if you see it cheaper elsewhere, then hola. I am only referring to shipping products.

NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT starts at £103.95 inc VAT

NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Standard starts at £159.28 inc VAT

NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT starts at £209.15 inc VAT (compared to an XL at 203.51 inc VAT)

Remember both the GeForce 6600 GT and GeForce 6800 GT PCI-E cards above are NVIDIA SLI capable, so you have the ability to add another card, which is presently something only NVIDIA has.

Also, we supply cards in both PCI-E and AGP, all these cards are available and have been shipping for some time.

With regards entry level, the NVIDIA GeForce 6200 TC (TurboCache) has been shipping for a few months now, and we will know how it competes when the competitors have an available product. It is currently in stock on Dabs from 39.25 inc VAT.

I have just checked SCAN as well, and they have stock of pretty much everything at some great prices.

It is worth having a read of the latest edition of Custom PC were Mr Ross and Mr Dutton have their own columns. They have just done a massive round up of AGP and PCI-E mainstream cards, very interesting indeed.
