I doubt very much he'll get £70 for his 2nd hand 9800Pro so getting a 6800GT or an X800XL would be fantastic for the job at a reasonable price. Both cards will perform extremely well in all the latest games and not everyone has to have the latest and greatest for the sake of getting a few extra numbers in the latest 3DMark application...

a x800xt in agp can be had for as cheap as a x800xl. the xl will struggle with high res's and aa/af, the xt will pull away, due to increased clocks. core is 100mhz higher, and the xt's o/c way better.

    no brainer in my view.

edit. even found an x800xt pe msi, retail for 270inc vat at overclockers. thats a bargain.

As I said, I was basing my opinions on the fact he said he was working on a budget of £200 plus an old 9800Pro, now Nox has come back and said he would be happy to chuck in a little bit extra so an X800XT could indeed be afforded.

However, I would still recommend a 6800GT or ATi equivalent for less money and put more elsewhere to even out the performance. I believe the X800XL is on par with the 6800GT, and I have an XFX 6800GT, and your comment about these cards not handling high resolutions with AA and AF enabled is baloney. I run every game I can at 1600x1200 with full effects and 4xAA 8xAF (if possible) and they all run smoothly, even HL2.

Save yourself £50-70 mate and get a 6800GT/X800XL, the performance increase over the 9800Pro will be unreal and they won't disappoint!

6800gt with 4xx and 8xaa at 1600x1200 on far cry, riddick, etc, you have no chance, same with xl.

xtpe for 270quid. 200quid, plus sale of 9800, and bingo.

saving 50quid or whatever, what is he gonna get with that

50 quid... how about a nice VGA cooler to clock the XL pass an XTPE.... buy a few tubes of neon to make his case a living lightbulb.... pay a visit to tesco and get some dinner..... and yes.... 25 pints of carling...

    okay... maybe not the overclock...

but still, 50 quid could get you 2 new chart games from gameplay to fancy that new GT/XL....

Ahh, good point. He could easily get a 6800GT and run it at Ultra speeds if he really felt the need for a penis enlarger for the "benchmark boys". I don't think he'd even to buy an additional cooler, I found out my card runs at Ultra speeds out of the box.

Hence you'd get an Ultra speed card and a spare £50 for those 25 pints of Carling. Just don't try to install the graphics card after consuming them!

Dat goes for not installing them WHILE ur having that 25 pints.... and anything that has 25 pints volume... think Jabba the Hutt installing this card... no?

Yes... GT clocks pass Ultra speed using stock cooling... did 430MHz, 1150Mhz no prob... probably a little smokey... but its fine on these cards..

the gt might not hit ultra speeds, besides the x800xt pe is a stronger choice.

and your not gonna hit xtpe speeds with an xl on air, no way.

I haven't played Riddick, but I remember FarCry looking amazing after installing my 6800GT. IIRC it was the first game I tried and it looked stunning! Can't remember the exact settings I used back then but I know it was 1600x1200, probably with low Antistropic Filtering though, but it still ran smooth.

If you wanna waste £50-70 getting a few extra frames per second (that you can't see) to boast about, even though the GT can do Ultra speeds, then by all means do so, but it doesn't mean that everyone should do the same.

an xt is the same price as a gt, and a xtpe rapes a gt and can be had 40quid more.

ahh... dun u just love it? ati-nvidia rivalry... where wonderful gfx orgy comes to life... but look, xt or xtpe or gt... it really depends on how deep is someone's pocket... and i really dont think an extra 10fps in far cry constitute sufficient (nando-cum-flamin) rage for the word 'rape'... 800xt really rapes a 9600xt yes... 800xt fairs better than gt would be much sweeter to the ears... and please smokey21... gt at ultra clock? its just a walk in the park... rips thru ultra clock anytime my fren... and unlike you I don't go criticizing other ppl's cards with 'rape'...

OK, I give up. No point flogging a dead horse. You're obvisouly so set on the thought that you need a top of the range card to get those extra few frames there's no point trying to dispute it with you. But at least compare apples to apples, comparing an X800XT PE to a 6800GT is like comparing apples to oranges. Besides, there's a £70-80 price difference, not £40. And the XT PE wouldn't "rape" (as you so nicely put it) a 6800GT, the performance would be negligible to the naked eye.

It's not about that, we're comparing the £200-220 range to the £270-290 range. I would recommend the 6800GT or the X800XL, depending on which they wanted, ATi or nVidia. Both would be very good cards, but I personally went for the 6800GT.

Yup, it's common knowledge that the vast majority of 6800GT's will do Ultra speeds out of the box, so for someone with so much knowledge to say any different is beyond me...
