I said before, its a guideline.. if u want to nit-pick on levels, then I admit it wont go all that well with 6xAA.. but comparatively 8xAA will stuter on most levels..

The point here is to guide the guy make a valid judgement.. Both cards have their merits. 7900GT runs cooler, its smaller, it overclocks well and it provides near similar performance in most titles.

The X1800XT has HDR+AA and have HQ AF, a not-as-nice-as-8xAA 6xAA that will work with most games and not have a headache playing it.

So if he's not fitting the thing into a shuttle, I fail to see the reason why anyone would dismiss an X1800XT as an equivalent option. The noise it generates during desktop is inaudible.. and if you can hear the fan spinning during gaming, then perhaps you're not paying enough attention on your games.

And the X1800XT isnt that hot in the case as everything is expelled out of the system. Its a oven for sure.. but its definitely not a winter heater.

Thanks for letting us know you're not wearing us Green Blinkers, but please stop branding honest X1800XT users recommending the card as ATI fanboys..

why are you answering my post then? there wasnt even a Max Tractor anywhere in my post..

Some ppl just likes to make conversations foul.. I suppose you're not one of them..

I'm waiting for the 'yawn... you're so boring' or an ignorant no reply from that person..

    ------- *snap* ---------

Anyways, its really up to your needs Rack.. If I were to choose again, I would go for the X1800XT for obvious reasons. If size and fresh air is not of issue, you'll be satisfied with the feature set ATI has put into making the X1800XT. If you need a single slot cooler card, a card that will run cooler, and that you already got so sick of CCC then 7900GT is a no brainer..

Hope all the information, other than the pointless ignorance from some annonymous members, will help you make an honest judgement.

I think for the 512MB and the fact that I have a GPU block ready and waiting for this card, I will go with the X1800XT. I'm really tempted by the 7900GT just because I've never had one, where as I've tried every other card except a X1900xxx.

OK, thanks for the contributions guys, I really hoped people would 'keep it real', but as soon as the f-word comes out it's pretty much all over.

BTW, I can't beleive I can get one for 160quid in the states, while these are more than 200 in the UK... where does that money go?

I've also used both cards (admittedly the 256mb X1800XT) and in all honesty i can see no difference between NV and ATi IQ, this really is the longest running ATi argument ever and its a complete load of rubbish. I used the HQAF on the X1800 aswell and couldnt really see where the benefits came in, however there was no performance loss so it was always on

Speed wise, yep with both at stock the X1800XT is slightly faster but its not as alot of people make out "omg its liek ALOT faster!", im talking 2 maybe 3 fps faster in most cases? Overclocking both clock extremely well and got very nice boosts, factor in the volt mod on the 7900gt and it takes the lead by a good margain.

Noise wise with the stock coolers its a victory to ATi as NV's 7900gt cooler is terrible. Its on 100% all the blooming time, sounds like a banshee has invaded your case.

Having said that i would go for the X1800XT in this instance as your running 1600x1200, where the extra RAM will come in very handy. However if it were under this res it would as i have said quite a few times come down to whether your prepared to volt mod your card or not.

And before anyone comes along and says "lies, works for NV" etc. Here is my card history: Voodoo2, Geforce4 ti4200, ATi 9800, ATi X800pro, ATi X1800XT, Geforce 7900gt

Very well said, I think that sums it up nicely. The 7900GT looks like a speed demon with the volt-mod, which I would be happy to do. But with 256MB and my Dell 2001FP, I'm going with the X1800XT with 512mb. I had to buy 2G of RAM to play FEAR when I had my old X1800XT 512, so I can safely say that the memory will be used...

I think that this has made up my mind too, as i have been thinking of getting an x1800xt 512 for a while. And i think that the discussions here have backed up what i have read, which i have summarised for myself...

    - I have just got an Acer al1916w (1440x900) so i guess the 512 ram could come into use

    - The 7900gt is apparently loud, as too is the x1800xt's BUT i think that i can use AtiTool to set my own fan thresholds, and hence noise levels.

    - BOTH cards are fast, and arguably (without mods) near each other. I think that either would be a good choice.

Now, i have just looked at overclockers.co.uk and picked out the X1800XT and a Hiper 580 PSU but there is one question left, Will this card be made fairly obselete with Vista? This is going to be out later this year (i think) and i read somewhere that DX9 cards will take a performance hit due to *Insert some technical explanation I cant remember*.

Now, i will be spending near to 300 quid on getting my graphics up and running like this. Would it be better to just wait until DX10 cards come out - I'm sure that i read somewhere that these start coming out in the summer or just after....

If someone can try to reassure me that this card wont just be a paperweight with games in Vista then, OCUk can expect an order tomorrow...

    JP

I'd get the cheapest one you can with the decent memory. I beleive you can find them for £200.

DX10 looks like it will be a huge change in GPU's, there's a tech article on HardOCP. But it will take a while for everything to fall into place. It'll be christmas b4 anything solid appears IMO.

I am contemplating getting an X1800XT 256mb card. Not sure if it is the right choice yet. I don't want to Volt mod a 7900 but i do like to overclock.
