try getting the motherboard to budge into running 2T at 200MHz.. I dont think you'll even need to relax the timing.. perhaps pump a little juice into the chipset?

Works for me.. 4x512MB never worked more smoothly..

Thanks for the tip sawyen I tried this and kicked all the RAM back up to 200 MHz FS...

*edit*: hmm it still keeps happening... really odd if you ask me. I double checked with Prime for an hour - no errors (I know I need to run it longer).
    To be honest I'm stumped!

I suppose that the only thing that I can do is to turn off menu-fading. I again tried having a go on HL-2 DM for 20 minutes without a crash in sight...

    Hey ya,

It seems perfectly stable to me on both benchmarks with no sign of drop-outs or artifacts at all - it's so strange!

I even played some more HL2: E1 for an hour with no probs - it's a great card though despite that

The X1800XT is a mighty card, abit old compared to its younger brighter 1900XT, but still more than enough for anything today and tomorrow..

It's worth a try, CCC is really goofy! And not very stable. Don't ask me why!
I didn't even realise that Ati still made those - I loath .net framework - thank you so much.

tried it with just the default windows drivers? i.e. no cats installed? If it does the same thing, it's more likely to be hardware.

Have you tried updating to the latest BIOS for your Asus A8N-SLI Premium?

As there were some issues with compatibility between the x1800 and NF4 motherboards.

Good idea -- I tried after a clean install of XP with the default VGA drivers and it seemed to work fine, but naturally there's no display acceleration so scrolling etc. is pretty painful. It seems that as soon as DX acceleration is enabled (through installing the Cats) then the card chokes on just fading up a menu.

My board originally came with the 1101.005 BIOS which I upgraded the other day to 1302 to see if it would solve any problems.

At the moment, I am trying to scrape together enough money to buy a cheap socket 939 chip and a new PSU so that I can test the card in a spare motherboard that I acquired so I can see if it's the card...

Dude try playing GRAW at 1280x1024@60hz+ and crank up the details, lol, it will cripple the x1800xt 512mb.

Did you sort it mate? i got the same mobo (1009) as you and c3d x1800xt 512mb, i reckon it's your memory? did you say you are using corsair and OCZ together? is everything setup correct in your bios?. I used to have 4x512mb corsair 3200XMSPRO 2,2,2,5 2T @400MHZ but was always unstable, i would not recommend mixing RAM.

Thanks for your input Goss, most appreciated.
I've tested the ram for what seems like ages on prime, memtest and even windows memory diagnostic () with no errors at all.

Well after spending most of the evening building a complete system out of the following:

    Asrock 939-Dual-Sata
    A64 3000+
    1Gb Corsair TwinX 4400 C25
250Gb WD SATA 2 hard disk
    Tagan Easy-con 580W PSU

and of course the X1800 XT

The only things that were common to both systems are the RAM, HD and Graphics card.

I just installed the latest cats and next reboot after getting into windows, I clicked the start menu... it started to fade up and *wham* VPU recover pops up and then I get some display corruption on one of the pop-up baloons in the status area.

Am I being completely thick here, or does this seem like it's the graphics card doing this with a hardware issue?

SourceQuench that's odd for sure, you still having the problem?, i'm not sure what to suggest, have you tried going into system properties/advanced/performance/settings/visual effects/adjust for best performance, tick or untick the last two settings. Not saying it'll work but oughts worth a bash.

Hi Goss, thanks for your suggestion, I tried without success

On a different note, in a moment of complete madness I decided to buy a brand new 1900XT and I tried it in the AsRock system. It is a little hard to tell at the moment, but everything seems to be alright (fingers crossed again and again). Obviously there's some issue with the x1800, I don't know whether it's software or hardware related.

I think I might try and RMA it and see what happens (although it is with OCUK) - if it does turn out to be the card, does anyone want a nearly new x1800?

I was with you right up to that last bit. One day people will realise that cheap retailers and customer service do not go together. Your card has probably already been RMA'ed to them at least once before (allegedly).

Please tell me you bought the X1900 from somewhere reputable?

    Cheers,
    Stephen
