    another 7900GTX or 8800GTS?

Ok, so i need to RMA my 7900GTX and was just going to do a straight swap, but since the new cards are out and all, i'm in two minds as to what to do now.

I mean the GTS' are the same price as my 7900 cost so i'm hoping I can just ask to swap without paying extra, the thing is, will the 8800GTS be faster than the 7900GTX? I can't find any proper reviews of the GTS at time of writing so i'm just looking for a general "yes it will be faster" or "no it won't be faster".

I'm sure lots of reviews will be floating around in the coming days but, if I hear "no it won't be faster" I can RMA the card tomorrow and not wait around a week or so until GTS reviews come around. So what do you think?

    Cheers,
    Chris.

    It will be faster.

But depending on when you bought it and who you bought it from the chance that you'd get an 8800GTS in exchange for your card is slim, unless it's under a month old.

You reckon? :/ Even though it cost the same price? (it's 2 months old from micro direct). Their RMA ssection says "Items may be replaced with equivalent if originals are not available." and the thing is if i get another 7900GTX it will probably be faulty also which will be crap!

They will have other 7900GTX's available, if that one fails then you may question them and see what they say, but for now you'll just get another 7900GTX, you can try and get a refund and buy another card, phone them and see.

I think you are being a bit optimistic there mate, they will probably send you a replacement 7900, and if they do, flog it quick while it still has some value

I'll sleep with their sales people, then get my money back and look at an 8800

Oh well just rang them and he said swapping a 7900GTX for an 8800GTS won't be a problem at all

8800GTS will be better for now and the future.
I'm basing that opinion on the fact the the top 8800 is better / equivalent to 2 7900's, and the 8800GTs will be 80% to maybe 90% of a 8800GTX.

Heres a review which compares the 7900GTX directly to both the 8800GTS and GTX, so it will give you the info you need regarding performance difference. Guru3d's a good site.

According to the reviews Ive read, the 8800GTS is quoted as being almost exactly 25% slower than the 8800GTX.

MSIC: Just out of interest, whats with the low clock (2.37Ghz) on your Opteron 146? Surely it can do more than that on stock volts...

I saw in some benchmarks the 8800 GTS even beats the 7950GX2. Well only in certain games but that is really good.

Oh, the Opteron can indeed, but when I was running away at 2.67 GHz plus, I got random reboots etc, so i put it down to the motherboard that I havent invested enough time exploring. And i've explored alot. And i know how to overclock. I dont want a new motherboard, as I want a Core 2 Duo at the next change.

To be honest with you, apart from bragging & smugness, 2.37 is just as good as 2.67 in anything I can do.

but think of your superpi times man!

im suprised they are willing to 'upgrade' you! not a lot of places would have, i assue it would be cheaper for them (ie purchase price) to have given you another GTX, what are the retail prices for your old card compared to the GTS?

bought the GTX at 324, it's now on their site for 293. GTS is 358. When i asked i said can i just put the money towards to get a GTS and they said yes so i assume they mean from the price I originally purchased it, and, if not, it's only another 50 quid so i'm not losing much. Sent it off today so gotta ring Monday to tell them I want a GTS instead, just hope that guy wasn't talking rubbish and i can actually do it!

That's pretty good, effectively you'll be selling your 7900gtx for it's full selling price. That's a bit better that ebaying it!
