Windows won't install 2 updates Grrrr

I have a machine that is a fresh rebuild (format start again jobby). I have just gone to do the windows updates and it has done quite a few but has stopped on two of the which it has downloaded but won't/refuses to install.

    The updates in question are

    KB923689 (normal update)
    KB910437 (a windows update update)

I have tried all sorts, like starting the installer service manually, going into safe mode, installing them 1 at a time to see if it is one of them stopping both but nothing works. Everytime I turn the machine off it tells me it has these 2 updates to install but when I turn it back on it has never done it!

Any thoughts help would be most appreciated.

Have you checked the event viewer for the system logs? Might give a little more reasoning behind the why of not installing (files in use that sort of thing)

Also you say when you turn it back on? Why not install from the shield in the systray?

Shutdown and install is the work of the devil where I am, cripples machines all over the place.

Push comes to shove you could try downloading the update manually and installing that way?
