    Windows XP HELP

I uninstalled mcafee 2007 while then installing AVG. Then I shutted down the computer. However, after this it takes ages at the welcome screen and then when it finally loads it stops with the desktop but with no taskbar or sound but control pannel works. I then can't do anything. I've done a virus scan with AVG and spyware scan with adaware but it still does not work. WHat should I do? I have lost my XP installation disk as well do I have any options?

Use system restore to go back to your old settings.

Also if you ctrl-alt-delete if you can get task manager
Choose File, choose New Task (Run...) and type in
    explorer.exe

Click ok, taskbar (should) be back for you.

You may find you have to close the broken explorer process first

When I restarted it stopped at the welcome screen. Then I did a system restore to a month ago but it still stops at the welcome screen

If you can get it running in safemode, then unistall AVG (the conflict with this is probably stopping you from getting into Windows). Then try running McAfee's own removal tool:

    http://download.mcafee.com/products/...tches/MCPR.exe

    Restart, then install AVG again.

You might also find this article useful:

If all else fails, go for a repair install:

Edit: Don't bother with System Restore - a waste of time for issues like this IMO.

I uninstalled AVG but still stops. I cannot run the removal tool in safe mode either. I also recently installed the wifi card and so I uninstalled the drivers for this just in case maybe I should remove it and try? Also when its at the welcome screen I can move the mouse fine and the computer acts like it is on the desktop so I can move the mouse freely but it just stops loading and stays there.

If you've already tried CTRL-Alt-Delete as suggested above to no effect, then it sounds like you'll need to do a repair install...

Edit: You may be able to do tweak the registry in safe mode to get rid of McAfee, but it will take time and could screw things up worse...

I worked out why the system restore didn't work. I t tried to boot normally but what I needed to do was when it rebooted boot into safe mode again. Then it actually finished the system restore. So now its working agian YAY.

Great stuff! TBH that's the first time I've actually heard of the Windows system restore function working!

You've learned the hard way - if you ever have the misfortune of getting a PC with McAfee (or Norton) pre-installed, you need to give it a thorough cleaning out before installing something else.

BTW - AVG is very good IMO. I've never had a virus while using it and it uses very little in the way of system resources. Oh, and yes - its free!

    Install Hijack this,

    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/htlogtutorial.php

follow the instructions, remove all traces of McAfee and you should have no more problems.

Let us know how you get on.
