Identify whats wrong with my laptop :D...

    Got an Acer Aspier 1652Z

Okay guys... iv had it just over a year its gone wrong already - monitor had lines down it. DAMN THING.

Anyway now its a bit more serious.... now and then the computer is going fine. The monitor then goes completely black but the computer stays on. But its like its crashed because music clips just keep being repeated etc.

Then it stays in this stupid 'seizure' state for like 8 seconds and then turns off!

GRRR .. to be fair when i move it around when its on... the exhaust fan makes a sort of grinding noise lol

Obviously Acer will want to charge me for this thing because its out of warranty.

DO NOT BUY ACER PRODUCTS... but what do you think is wrong here?

    Thanks guys

Have you at least tried a fresh install of windows and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, you're sorted, if it does, we can rule it down.

Try a few things (in order)
    1. Start -> Run -> cmd -> chkdsk c: /R
    2. Re-seat the memory in your laptop
    3. Run SP2004 / Prime95 in Blend mode and see if it REBOOTS or STOPPED or going fine for hours. (Go to point 4 if it was fine for hours)
    4. Reinstall window drivers (if you really don't want to reinstall windows)
    5. Reinstall windows (fresh / factory recovery disc)
    6. Come back and ask again.

    Hey, thanks for the reply.

Would a fresh install of windows mean that my hard drive gets wiped? Or can I do it without a format?

Re-seat the memory - so this would mean taking the laptop to bits. I have done this in a PC but never a laptop and obviously they would be able to tell etc im a bit dubious of doing this to be honest.

Windows drivers... could you post a site where i can find them please? I have googled it but can only find a place that charges and the rest is just rubbish and i don't really know what drivers are needed. Iv never updated windows drivers ever, didn't even realise they existed !

    Thanks again

Sounds like a problem with either the screen or the onboard video, not too sure how to fix this though.

In terms of reseating the RAM there should be a flap on the bottom of the lappy that you can open to get to the RAM. Also try blowing through the exhaust/inlet vents for the CPU fan as it may be clogged with dust causing the fan to whine.

yes i agree dont buy acer, if the warranty is off then (i cant be held responsible just a suggestion) why dont you open it up and check to see if your fans are working properly. i think overheating could be an issue for seizure restarts
