Torrent config on wireless laptop help please

    Hi,

im only on 1 meg NTL brodband, but i would like to get Azaureus set up properly on my laptop (inspiron 1300) via MSI wireless router.

its all set up and working, but when Azaureus is running on the laptop, the internet connection on the main pc (this one via rj45 into the msi router) grinds almost to a halt, even if the laptop is only uploading a couple of k/sec. downloads are mostly under 20k but occasionally shoot to about 80k.

all i want to do is assign a bit of bandwidth to the main pc (enough for surfing, email etc) so the laptop can do its stuff on azaureus.

the laptop is running in the DMZ on the router. azaureus is showing the NAT as ok. the mcafee firewall doesnt seem to affect the bandwidth if switched on or off.

    any ideas?

    cheers

what speed have you got your uploads set to? What max connections have you got? what router do you have? It may be worth you investing in one of the wrt54Gs' PCworld have on offer, so you can do proper QoS.

Your azureus settings should look something like:
    max uploads (global) 8k (ish)
max down ~ 80k, although this isnt so hard and fast.
    max connections, 300 or so.

theres a plugin on the azureus website that automatically throttles down/up based on the ping of any website you care to mention, that might be suitable, although it takes a long (2 or 3 hours) time to settle down

at the moment, the upload is set to 13k which is about the max that i can get anyway. downloads are set to 0 (unlimited).
max uploads per torrent = 3
    connections per torrent = 70
    max connections globally = 300

all these are defaults, ive tried lowering the upload speed but that doesnt seem to stop my main pc from slowing down when azaureus is on on the laptop.

i was wondering about the QOS but wasnt sure what or how to adjust things.

the router is this one http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=279366

    cheers

13k is far too high on a 1meg line, youll be flooding your modem with request, which means nothing can get through. Best way to think of it is like a bucket with a hole in the bottom, the upload buffer on your modem is the bucket, your uploads are water, if you put water in the bucket faster than it can come out of the hole then new stuff wont fit, so request to servers to download pages etc, wont get through.

its set to 8k now, but internet is really at a crawl on the main pc. ive had a look in the router configuration and there is no mention of QoS.

so really what i want to know is, is there any way i can set aside a few k's of bandwidth for browsing on the main pc?

    cheers

Unfortunately that router is quite a cheap model and so doesnt support the QoS feature. I am surprised that your connection grinds to a halt even with an 8kb/s limit set. Try setting it to 6kb/s and see if that helps at all.

Another good step is to send your desktop to http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks and run the wizard. See what it advises you to do with your RcvWin and MTU...etc and make the changes and restart. Hopefully that will help a fair bit aswell.
