If you're using Word 2003 have you tried an Open and Repair? Do a file Open as normal then then in the bottom right drop down list select Open and Repair.
just tried that, no result get the same problem
Some questions:
what version of word are you working on?
what version of office did you use to create the document?
Your not trying to open the temp file of a saved file are u?
Was the orignial definatly created in Office and not something else like works?
Is the file extension of the original .doc?
Permanently confused
used office 2003 to create the document (using same version to open it)
dont think im opening the temp file, pretty sure it isnt though
yes original .doc
sounds like it may be corrupt then?. Can u open it with notepad? is it just txt?
There are some programes that will fix corrupt word docs maybe have a hunt round for one of them
Permanently confused

OK... this normally fixes Word Corruption problems.
Search for all temp files beginning with a ~ (they are hidden files), and delete them
Search for the default template file normal.dot and delete it (or rename it), when you launch word it will generate a new one.
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.
Download and install OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org) and give that a go if the above helpful advice doesn't work
cant find any temp files withing the folder
already have openoffice, doesnt work with that aswell
seems as if ill have to redo all that work
................unless someone has a miracle repair
thanks so far guys
Check the temp files folder for a possible autosave backup (name wont be the same but there might be one)
Based on your screen shot its interpretting the document as lots of carriage returns (or possibly another character which doesnt fit the normal character set)
I dont suppose you could attach the file so I could give it a go repairing?
Have you had a look at it in Notepad? That will show you the full detail of the file, might give an indication of whats in there/possibility of restoring the text of the document without formatting
Also have you tried http://www.mvps.org/ ?? Find some of Word MVP's sites on there, they've saved my life before now!
