I've taken the PSU and shined a torch in it now. There is white goo everywhere inside it. Looks like the staypuff marshmallow man exploded in my power supply

    Love the description.

Now you see how once you found the component it is kinda hard to miss that something's wrong with it; more than a slight convex bulging, huh

Hope the rest of your system is okay. Best of luck.

Like someone else said, dont bother dismanteling the hole system and send it back, espeicaly dont now that you have found the apparant cause of the problem, just go to the old local computer shop dont spend a lot of money on a new PSU but one thats good enough to handle your computer load to make sure that the PSU was your only problem and that nothing else has been affected but you should be fine, with luck anyway.

What he said, only while I'd not get an overspec'd PSU, I'd not buy a cheap one either - the only components I've had fail are cheap PSUs & if you're unlucky they can do lots of expensive damage on the way out.

Re: Help, my PC went up in flames

And for those that might be reading; for the love of god don't switch the psu on and off to check stuff after a bang and smoke comes out the back.

Something is broken and it's most likely the psu. Turning it back on again is risking your system further. The best thing to do is look at the psu for damage - take it out of the case and have a good look at it, even sniff it. If it's dead it will have a nasty smoky smell and sometimes things will rattle around inside.

If it doesn't look like the psu then it's time to take the rig apart and look for any signs of fire damage on the motherboard and graphics card aswell as cables - blown capacitors and scorch marks. That smoke has to come from somewhere.

Good luck with your rig I hope only the psu died and nothing else and you get it back up and running soon. I had a tagan 480-u01 go bang on me once and nothing else died. It's the reason for buying quality psus.

Thanks for the advice, I'll be waiting a while on the replacement due to postal strikes, but I'll let you all know how things are once I get it.
