    dvd drive problem

I've just brought a new dvd drive because I thought the last was faulty, but i'm having problems with the new one as well

Yes i r teh nub, tis true

When I have it powered up the read light just stays on, it is recognised in the bios, but windows doesnt when it boots up! I havn't done anything to install it, just plugged it in, do I need to do something in windows or the bios? I've checked all the wires to make sure they are plugged in ok?

    elp!

    thanks again

    Re: dvd drive problem

Have you checked the jumper settings on the drive itself? If its on its own IDE cable (I'm presuming this btw) then move it to Master. I had a bit of trouble before when installing for the in-laws, and I've done loads!!!

No chance that you could try it in anyone else's computer could you?

    Re: dvd drive problem

    SATA or IDE ?

Is there a disk in the drive ? some drives, the light stays on when there is a disk in it... this is normal behaviour for some drives...

If it's there in the BIOS, try opening the disk management console in windows and see if it's listed there with a drive letter assigned to it...

Also, check the device manager to see if it's listed there under DVD/CD-ROM Devices

Is it 'NEW' new ? or 'second hand' new ?

    Re: dvd drive problem

if it's SATA, then there are no jumper settings... jumpers are only for IDE devices, Master / Slave does not apply to SATA.

ummm, can you try a different SATA cable ?

    Re: dvd drive problem

lol, check jumpers as suggested then....

If it's set as a MASTER, then it should be on the END of the IDE cable, if it's set as a slave, it should be connected to the middle connector on the IDE cable...

IDE cable is located correctly, is it ? does it have a locating 'lug' on it so that the cable can not be inserted the wrong way round ?

Got another IDE cable you can try ?

    Re: dvd drive problem

it wont open, ok, try with ONLY the power cable connected, and no IDE cable connected at all, it should open then, if not, it's most likely 'D~O~A' or 'dead on arrival' if you prefer, contact supplier and get RMA number and return for replacement...

    Re: dvd drive problem

ok, sounds to me like the IDE cable is faulty, OR connected the wrong way round...

there should be a locating lug on each IDE connector, that means the cable can only go in one way round, if you remove the cable and try and insert it the other way up, it shouldn't be able to go in the socket because of a sticky out bit of plastic on the connector...

If your cable does not have that connector, then it sounds most likely from what you describe, that the cable is the wrong way round.

To fix, simply remove the cable, rotate it 180 degrees, and plug it back in...

As a guide, the ribbon cable should have a red line down one edge of it, that red line should correspond to pin 1 on the motherboard, that should help to ensure the cable is connected the right way around if you have no locating tab on it, not all cables do sadly... Pin 1 on the motherboard should be printed on the PCB, you may need to look real close to see it, but it will be there right at the side of the IDE connector on the mobo.

Failing this, the IDE cable it's self is borked, replace it....

    Good luck !

    Re: dvd drive problem

just tried another ide cable and it did the same thing, both cables also had those mounting lugs on them so I can't be putting em the wrong way around can I?

    Re: dvd drive problem

    yikes...

no, if they have locating lugs, you shouldn't be able to put them in the wrong way round...

this is a new drive, what was wrong with your old one that you decided to buy a new one ? same fault ?

    2 cables, same fault...
    2 drives, same fault...

    that just leaves the motherboard

Is there another IDE socket you can try ? what mobo is it ? make and model please so I can look up the specification

    Re: dvd drive problem

Do you have an IDE hard drive connected to 1st IDE socket and the DVD drive connected 2nd IDE socket?
If so plug the HD into the other IDE socket go to the BIOS and set all the IDE devices to 'AUTO', if the 2 socket is working the system should boot to the O/S. If it works the IDE socket on the M/B must be working.

btw I think the cable must have been in the right way round if the BIOS detected it.

    Re: dvd drive problem

Not so strange really... anything can happen, at any time... pretty much....

As luck would have it, the ASUS website is 'down for maintenance' so I can't get the specification on that board....

Does the board have 2 IDE sockets ? or just one ?

Is your hard disk an IDE or SATA ?
