After I power on my PC, I get a black screen. Could this be the monitor or a problem with my computer?

Do any of the fans spin up?
Do you get any beeps from the computer?
Are all the monitor connecting leads in place?
Are there any indicator lights on the monitor?
Are there any panel light indications on the computer?
Can you go to the set up screen on the monitor?
Have you changed anything on the computer immediately prior to this problem?
If there is a switch on the back of the computer PSU, has it been switched off?
Is there power at the mains socket(s) that the computer and monitor are plugged into?
