Disc cleaning services - where to go?

Does anyone know somewhere that does a proper disc cleaning service as I have a few software discs that are too scratched to work reliably anymore I've heard Gamestation and GAME should do it for a couple of pounds, just wondering if there's anywhere else (esp. if they're cheaper)

Have you tried the old toothpaste trick on the discs, might be worth a shot

Re: Disc cleaning services - where to go?

wipes weren't good enough (needed scratches removed, not just cleaned). i just had a disc done in Gamestation york today for £1.99; they use a Venmill VMI 3500a - Venmill - 3500 Buffing Unit and presumably most other gamestation stores are the same (those things are about £2000 to purchase, i can't see individual stores going out and spending that much). Anyway, I don't think it resurfaces as such but there's some serious buffering going on, although they just did the basic 30 second clean and not the longer 60 second "deep buff". It was enough for mine though, there's still scratches on the thing but not many (mostly on the outer edge) and it's playing fine now, although there's only about 2 GB of data on it (it's a 4 GB xbox dvd) so whether it would've had problems if there was more data on the outside of the disc i dunno. You could probably just ask the employee to use the deep buff button to clean if you want to be sure (fwiw, press deep buff, then press start; i dunno how often those guys use the things).

Another weird thing is, after i'd played it, there were what looked like little scratches from the inside to about 1cm in to the disc, like the laser had burnt them in. I ran a cloth over them and they just rubbed away, so either the laser burn through what must've been some layer of cleaning fluid or whatever was on there, or more likely something had picked up a load of the cleaning fluid from the inside of the disc and moved it over the rest of the disc, and having read the 3500 manual they say to remove any residue that's on the center (or rather, don't put it there in the first place) before playing. And I guess that's what happened as there was a load of crap on the inside of mine. Anyway, lesson is, clean the inside plastic of the disc before playback, otherwise it ends up with whole new "scratches".

So there's probably better services out there, but for £1.99 if you ask for the deep buff clean it should be fine for medium looking scratches.
